This means that during the night on the inside there is tiny LEDs that light up to illuminate the interior in the front and rear, this creates a kind of ambiance.

new to bmw ambiance :)

I just ordered my first ever Bimmer, and have no idea what the ambiance lighting looks like in the e90. I've seen it once in my aunt's 330 convertible (previous model), but I dunno if it'll look the same/similar since hers was a convertible.

Anyone have any pictures??

I CAN'T WAIT 2 MONTHS!!!

No, I don't think this is what it means. I think it means when you open the doors, there are lights down in the lower areas that light up so you find things on the floor as well as lights in the ceiling that come on.

Does it have interior lights that stay on at night to give it a bit of mood lighting??

No disrespect, but that is what ambient lighting means. Here is a pic of the ambient lighting LED's. They are two amber LEDs placed in the top console of the front and rear compartments. They remain on at all times the the exterior lighting is on giving the interior a nice amber glow. Very cool.

Hope this image helps with any confusion.

I have that on my TSX, it's a blue LED that lights up the shifter area. Looks cool

interior ambiance leds are nothing new, have been on many cars (acuras, audis, bmws etc.) for quite some time now. what the e90 has that others don't are leds on the outside door handles that illuminate the ground when u unlock the car.

First reply is correct. Ambiance lighting is a dim LED orange light in both front and rear when headlights are on. Makes just enough light to see around the interior without being a distraction. My Passat W8 had red ambiance which was nice too.
The LED lights in the door handles are for convenience and safety, not ambiance.

They're on my Passat, and I love it. Very subtle, but if you know it's there, it really does make a nice difference. Nice orangy-red glowing down on the shifter.

Well, you're right. I guess I haven't driven it much in the dark yet. I went out and looked at it. Honestly it seems like such a trivial feature for them to even mention.

Yeah, I agree. So many other cars have them (as mentioned in earlier posts) and they have been around for quite some time. It is funny what they see as important sales info. But, just think the first car you had with them, I thought they were the coolest. My first 2001 Audi A4 had red ones shining down on the shifter area. My wife thought it was the coolest when it sparkled off her rings.
I'm sure new e90 owners are finding the same joy.

Those are pretty cool, had them in my e46 coupe too,but the lights in the door handles are a new feature,at least in the 3 series.

is there any way to change the color or brightness of these lights? either stock or aftermarket? i like this feature alot, but i barely ever noticed it in my car, and i really dont think they are as bright as they should be. obviously no one would want them THAT bright. but i would at least like it to feel like its lighting up the cockpit a little more.

Now if we are talking about the amber lighting, then most probably no. The colour of the lights is as much a BMW trademark as the blue and white propeller logo. It is just not publicised I suppose.

I saw a program where a BMW representative mentioned that the amber lights are set to a very specific frequency and will always glow the same colour regardless of which BMW you are in.

This holds true for the e36, e46 and e90 that I have owned and can vouch for. The colour of the night dash & surrounding ambient lighting is the one familiar item that has carried on from model to model and from that point of view, it is nice to have just that little bit of familiarity.

I certainly like the amber glow. I think if it was any brighter, it would start becoming distracting to the driver.

I hope that this is what everyone has been talking about

well, im sure this was common sense for the most of you, but i didnt think of it until last night. i turned up the instrument cluster lights, and of course, they were only about half way fully lit, and the ambiant lighting certainly turned up with it. its a little brighter then before. and its much nicer. it actually reaches like the shifter nob area a little bit. and i like that. i still think, and im sure 99% of you will disagree, but i think it could be ALMOST twice as bright and it would like good and not too distracting.
