Just call it an M1. If it is a 1 Series, and fully tuned by BMW ///M, then it is an M1.
Last time I checked, that sideburns and moustach M1 from 1978 was not based on a 1 Series. It was < 300 hp and created when BMW had no idea how they were going to name these things. Let it RIP. God, the M1 name protectionists remind of the '72 Miami Dolphins. The next M supercar can be named M0, M9, M10 or whatever, if it ever arrives. Little disappointed on the output, and no mention of 2 clutch 7 speed, carbon ceramic brake option, or 19" wheel option. However this car will be fast and worth the money (remember a loaded 135i Coupe is high $40k and a loaded M3 Coupe is $72k). What does a Dinan S2 135i cost anyway?

Technically, they could call it an M135i if they wanted. The M version of the E24 6 series was originally called the M635CSi before it became the M6. As mentioned, they could use the "tii" designation as well. Either way, I don't really give a damn what they call it, I'm just happy to hear it's coming.

Twin-scroll Garret GTX4294R
Higher flowing heads with higher RPM limit (8000RPM) LSD Weight reduction All solid charge piping Larger one-piece intercooler with welded cast end tanks High quality Recirculation valve (no plastic) Real performance tires Neutral suspension tuning (minimal understeer, adjust rotation with throttle) No CDV This would be good for insane horsepower at low boost levels, and still have awesome response. I think it would sell like hotcakes, especial after some reviews from a few automotive magazines. BMW, if you are listening, build this and I will buy. I can dream.......... |

I think he was referring to my partial skepticism as to whether this car will see the light of day or not (from the M-division)......that being said I would be surprised if they named it M1....if you know the Germans the way I know them you would understand that they DO hold certain things sacred...and the M1 happens to be one of those things....yet I am not going to be surprised if they come out with some crazy moniker for this vehicle like 1Mtii or 135M or M135....

The "M1" will have a completely new engine. The 135i is a compact version of the 335i and the M3 is a completely different animal to the 335i. M cars have their own engines. I believe the new "M1" will have a new engine with upgraded components equivalent to that of any other M car. Also, it will carry the M price tag too. I can't imagine it costing less than a 335i and more than an M3.

It would be defeat the purpose. That is why the M boss stated it would cost less than the M3.

I am still not a fan of the 1 series' looks. The rest of the car is magnificent, just those fugly headlights...
The 3 series is by far the most beautiful imho. The E92 M3 is the best looking car BMW makes. Then the 3 series, then maybe the 6ers. That said, I really hope the 1 series becomes a Evo STI killer. (it already beat the Cayman!) |
