Overheating issues

Hi. My car yesterday overheated. Got the yellow then red light. I immediately pulled over. I let the car sit for about 5 mins then I was good for another 20 miles with the heat on full blast. The fan for some reason isn't turning on which I believe is why I'm having this issue. I turn the AC on full blast and the fan goes go but not like in turbo mode. Could it be my water pump or thermostat? Thanks for any info.

Yeah most likely water pump and/or thermostat.

Did you have the fan wiring recall done?

That recall is for the HVAC fan, not the radiator fan. Btw... there have been several recalls for the 135i. B-pillar insulation, HVAC fan wiring, battery cable wiring, airbags, injectors, etc... Check with your dealer to see whats open recall wise.

OP sounds to me that your water pump is dying. Replace it along with the thermostat and U-shaped coolant hose. Let me guess... 60K to 85K miles on your car ? Replace them!!

Never knew there was a recall. Do you recall when that was?

I hope you got lucky and didn't overheat it to the point of damage. I don't see how the heater would help much. If it is the water pump, it's not moving water anywhere--not through the block, not through the radiator, and not through the heater. If there was no water moving, the thermostat may have read normal since it wasn't exposed to any of the boiling water from the block. I know it's too late for you, but for everyone else who might read this - unless you're about 1 mile from home, I think the best solution is always to tow it.

*edit* After rereading your post, maybe it was just your radiator fan malfunctioning. If that's the case, the heater would probably help so long as the water pump was working.
