Weird sound after BMS intake install
Hey guys, maybe someone else had this problem. Just installed the intake on my 2012 N55 135i last week, and I think something sounds weird.
Does not matter whether the car is hot or cold. I get the sound when accelerating mildly just at 2000 RPM or so as I rev up, and then dropping off at 2700 or so. If I press harder or step on it, the sound goes away. Hard to describe, but imagine putting some gravel in the bottom of a 5 gallon paint bucket and then sort of swirling that around on the bottom. Sort of a rough hollow sound. It's not the normal turbo sounds like a whistle or spinning sound. I had my mechanic ride with me and of course it didn't do it quite as bad as it usually does. BHe thought it sounded like at those RPMs it was just between vacuum and boost. I think it something else. Anyone else have this issue? I could hear the same sound faintly when I had the stock intake, but the aftermarket intake has just made it much louder and easier to hear. In other words, it's not new, just more pronounced since installing the intake. I knew that adding the intake would make the engine easier to hear, but I see everyone talking about how great it sounds. Mine makes me cringe. Also installed the JB4 a few days later, but hasn't really made any change. I do wonder if there might be something that I could tweak using the settings there that might help though. Thoughts on this is and how to fix? |

Hey no real thoughts other than to suggest that the mind can play powerful tricks. I say this because I know you were initially concerned about your high mileage and I respectfully suggest that you could potentially be on overly-heightened alert if that makes sense. I installed my BMS intake at 50,000 miles a month ago and yeah it made some new weird noises I never heard before. Break it down into steps. Assuming everything else is OK with the car, the only thing the intake did was really replace a filter. I mean, unless you dropped a screwdriver in there or something??
What you ought to do is take the 25 mins and swap back on your stock setup and then go drive. That's probably the best diagnosis is going back to stock and checking. I'm by no means a mechanic as you well know since I'm the guy that dropped a grommet. |

You found your solution. Record when you are tired of hearing the sound and it will go away!

I heard the noise and a lower level before I installed the new intake. It's the same before and after I replaced the charge pipe. Good thoughts though.

Sounds like me. Still no fixes. I do notice more recently that when the Darth Vader-like whooshing stops, I get a bump in power. Suspect it's a vacuum related turbo issue. I'm no mechanic, so I can't say or even intelligently speculate exactly what it is. I just know this sounds terrible, then stops, then the car feels better. As you note, this is only a lower speeds and lower gears, and not under hard acceleration.

My car has dinan s3, er chargepipe, wagner fmic, stock intake. I still have a warranty. If they see aftermarket part, they might deny it. |

The car had no mods other than an ER Chargepipe when I first heard the noise at a low level. As soon as I installed the BMS intake it was much louder, but not really different. It always been there in other words, just easier to hear with the intake. Installed JB4 after that, but no change.

Have to go in for brakes shortly, so I will have him check it out more thoroughly then. It clearly has something to do with some sort of open/close mechanism. |

I also have this exact same issue, it's been driving me crazy trying to figure out what it is. It only recently started happening. I do also have the BMS intake - though I've had that for a while and the noise just started.

I just got out from dealer this morning. They inspected vacuum connections at solenoid then replaced the pressure converter for tubocharger. Now, the noise was gone.
I'm so happy with this. I got repaired for free under warranty. |

That's interesting - has the car driven any differently since that has been replaced? I feel like the noise on mine is coming more from the rear of the car versus the engine bay, but I could be wrong.
