wind noise from frameless windows

Well, I'll admit its a bit cold in Winnipeg, but the colder it gets, the more wind/ traffic noise I get from the back edge of the driver side window. Anybody have the same problem, or more importantly, any one have it fixed? I"m afraid to have the dealer take the door apart (rattles) if there isn't a definite fix for this.

I have. Went to dealer once. They adjusted the windows. Still have noise under windy conditions. Must go back... but i think my driver side door is not well adjusted, thus not closing flush to the body panel.

You can try lowering the window just a little bit (just click the window button) and the wind noise may be lower.

Same for me I had to bring in my car twice now for them to look at it and they replace the window rubber molding and adjusted the door but it still lets the wind in. Next time I go for an oil change I will get them to look at it again.

Maybe try a seal conditioner (softens the rubber) if it warms up enough. This is a common problem in all vehicles with frameless windows.

I always get a little wind noise when I hit 110km/hr and over, is this what you guys are talking about? Thought it was just the way the car was built

It is a 1 series phenom, if not all frameless windows. As soon as I hit 110 mph and up, the wind noise dominates the cabin. At 130 and up, it overwhelms the stereo. I am interested in finding a way to reduce it, but I don't want some "lowrider" style plastic window flare that probably does not work any way.

I took mine into the dealer on Friday and they are going to replace the passenger side window seal, because there is about an inch where the seal isn't firmly pressed up against the window.

How fast did you need to be going before the noise really became noticeable? Out of curiousity.

110 km/h, was when it was noticeable, any faster and it sounded like the window was partially open! But it is an issue with these cars I guess. When my seal was wet, you could see the gap.

i had some snow stuck there which turned to ice and the whole drive home i heard rattling. mind you my car is only 2 weeks old and i was freaked out, so i rolled the window down an inch and saw some ice drop and rolled it back up, noise is gone.

Hmm. That *could* describe what I'm experiencing. Past 110km/hr I feel the wind noise creeping into the cabin but it could only be compared to the window being open a tiny bit...I'll talk to my SA at my next appointment. Thanks!

Back when i worked at a (big) VW dealership.... we would use a product from 3M. I don't recall the name... but it was basically a spray-on baby powder stuff. We would spray down an area we suspected a leaking door gasket seal,, close the door and then open the door - to see where the gasket was NOT sealing. It worked really well in tracking down leaks. Mattos(Autobody Wholesalers) sold this 3M spray powder in a can.

You can also use the old US Dollar bill trick. Have someone sit inside the car. Close the door with the dollar bill half way in the window, and work the "bill" up and down to see where the seal isnot that good. You might just be able to "adjust" the window height yourself. Its probably done usinga LONG torx socket run up thru the bottom of the door. You might check into this. Hazet made a nice tool (E-15 socket?)to adjust this on VW Golf III cabrios.

On my 1er I really have no windnoise until 110 mph. And then after 130mph its loud-er. But not that bad. This aint't no luxo barge. I mean what do you expect from a frameless window design>? Any of you drive a 90's 911(964) at warp 7 speeds? Now that car has some WIND NOISE!!!! And the window frames flex out at speed the faster you drive over 140 mph!!! Esp IF the dealer forgot to put the door "plugs" in when they did the PDI. lol

Good Luck

I have exactly same problem here.
I noticed the noise since this spring. I remember I had a ice built up on the window so the door was stuck since the window could not press down.

As you exprienced, if I lower the window down little bit, the noise level is lower.

I am wondering if you got it fixed.

Let me know, I will contact the dealer based on your answer.

thanks,
