Excessive freeway wind noise?

Hi folks,

Not sure this is the best place for this post, but nothing else seems better...

Has anyone experienced excessive wind noise while at freeway speeds? I'm getting a lot of noise from the window seal right at the top rear of the contact area of the window. So much so that people riding in the car (my wife in particular) comment on it. Much worse on the driver's side (as expected), but still present on both sides.

If so, has anyone been able to do anything to alleviate\fix it?

Thanks for any info,

ianc

Mine gets really loud only at speeds in excess of 200km/h (125mph).

FWIW, mine always leaks in a touch less car wash.

Make sure your window is all the way up when the door is closed, ie it returns automatically to tuck itself under the trim when door is closed. If not, try resetting the window.

Otherwise, apply some rubber conditioner.

Or get dealer to check it out if still under warranty, seeing you have 2010.

I get some wind noise as well when there is wind moving laterally across my car like if it is gusty outside. It is annoying but not as much as the three rattles I have going for me right now.

Ian - the windows can be adjusted for height(front and rear). Also the door striker pin can be adjusted to change the way the window seals against the door seal.

You could have an assistant sit inside the car... use a dollar bill between the door seal and the window... have an assistant run the dollar bill up along the edge of the glass - see sawing away as you go. IF you feel LESS resistance... you know the area where the seal is not making (full)contact. You could also use baby talcum powder along the window's edge and then close the door and see where any gaps are from the powder.

But the most common way I have seen 1Addicts members say their dealers fix this issue - is for the dealer to replace the entire door seal. Luckily on our e82's the door seal isn't as expensive as on some other BMW models. A new door seal runs about $93 each. Thats a lot better than the usual $300!

On my own car the wind noise gets really bad above 110 mph. But around 135 mph on up... it gets really loud!

Btw... my BMW Zentrum adjusted my passenger side window for me. They only charged me 35 euros to fix it. It might be worth asking your local dealer. ?

My passenger side was really bad. Took it to dealer while I was still on warranty and they ended up replacing the whole seal. Now no noise at any speed.

I drive a vert and there's relatively low wind noise, but now that you mention it, I might as well replace door seals. Maybe more expensive for the vert. We'll see.

Well in theory....you should replace these things every 5 years or so. Especially since they are so stinking HUGE!
Blame the sun and Hydrogen as to why they shrink!

Thanks for the advice guys. I was also thinking maybe of gluing some kind of rubber shim behind the top of the seal to push it out more against the windows.

Good troubleshooting for older cars Dack, I used some of those tricks on my old 911, but... I'm still under warranty.

Guess I'll bring it up next time I'm in...

Thanks again!

Now that the weather has turned colder, I've noticed the wind noise is alot worse.

I used Gummi Pflege on the seal and then closed the door while it was still wet - you can clearly see an area where the glass is not making any contact up in the corner.

Next trip in to the dealer, I'll bring it up
