Does anyone know where I can download a copy of an 08 135i Service or Shop manual?

I doubt if manuals are used anymore, probably all computer based modules.

If they are computer based modules, how does the consumer get a hold of them for personal use?

You can't - even if you could most of it is useless without the $40k of computer equipment and software you would need.

What kind of servicing were you thinking of doing?

I need to see diagrams of the car, it was in a previous accident, needs repair to the front suspension and other parts.

Perhaps a publisher will print one? Bentley has one encompassing the 2006-2009 335i coming out this October:

I'd love to have a factory service manual as well, but I'm not sure if they're available.

Here's a website that has that wiring diagrams for the 1 Series, but it's a PITA to use sometimes.

So you need 40k of computer equipment to turn some nuts and bolts? He isn't asking for diagnostic stuff. he needs a repair manual in which I would assume would be 75% mechanical. I guess your not a mechanic

If you all have not found this link, there is a supposed ebay seller for the BMW factory (electronic) repair manuals. I have not purchased one yet from this seller, but I did have previous success with this software for my 2001 X5.

It's been pretty helpful, although I ran into some issues being a Mac user. It requires VMWare to run. The seller provides a freeware copy for Windows, but I was only able to use a 10-day free trial version. The VMWare costs $79.99 for Mac, but since a Bentley manual typically runs $150, it's still not a bad deal.

But seriously the Bentley 3 series (E90) manual covers like 80% of the 1 series. Same engines, trans, much of the interior, suspension, etc. not that expensive on Amazon last I looked. Been worth every penny and then some when you're in a jam and need a detailed guide.
