The linked piece has useful information but is a bit overblown relative to risks. The only risk after battery replacement without coding is a shorter life for the battery. The car will charge it like it is an old battery instead of a new one. If the size is different you will have that too.

But my main reason for commenting is Carley seems to be too popular - the price has gotten really high. While is is not nearly as easy to use, that makes me suggest going to Bimmer Geeks for a cable and downloading INPA and NCSExpert. You only need the former if you don't change the size. They get $45 for the cable and I think the software download is free. The same cable and software does a lot of other things too and you don't have to keep paying to use it later.

You can code your battery for $45, in other words. With software that you don't have to keep paying for. There is a good DIY on what to do on this forum.

Haven't used Carly in a while. What's the story?

LOL. That's sad to hear, I guess I got it when it was reasonable, I have a lifetime purchase and it was $40.

They apparently want $60/year for Carly, plus you need a OBDII to bluetooth adapter and the one from Carly is $63. I'm not sure if that includes the battery coding portion, that used to be extra too.

Worst moment would be... it was new years eve 2016, snowing, had no garage. And i had to install and code new injectors because my car was misfiring so bad . Also, the DKAN cable i had didn't support coding so i had to walk 3 miles to the nearest auto store...

Got it done though and had a hell of a night

Originally it was just $60 for the adapter, then $60 for the app, once. People who bought it at that time get no subscription fee

I used to recommend it for ease of use (over INPA/NCSexpert) but with that cost it's just not worth it.

But either way it's worth buying your own battery + coding solution

Next best thing is downloading the BMW Standard Tools to a windows laptop and using that (steep learning curve, but far more powerful than Carly ever will be). You can perform every function and run every diagnostic that the dealer can from an electronics perspective.
