Demonstration of how much tire sizes can very
You'll sometimes see people say that a tire runs wide. Well, what does that mean? Most of us want to know what the widest tire is that we can fit without rubbing. You can't look only at the number embossed on the side of the tire. Manufacturers must have almost no oversight in the specifications they publish for their tires. Kind of scary. I took this picture the day my new tires got mounted. The tread width as listed on the Federal Web site is 9.3in. for a 255x35 18. Tirerack.com has the tread width of the 255x35 18 Continental ExtremeContact DW listed as 9.5in. See anything wrong there?

Tires can vary a lot. I run 265/275/35/18 r888 which run as wide as 275/285/35/18 r-s3.

Basic rule of thumb (and very rough one).
Any high performance street tire (ie RS3, ZII*, Rival, RE71R) add 10mm for comparison length Any R-Comp, add 20mm to equate to a typical street tire |

I'm looking at nankang ns2r, if I am planning to get their 235/40/17, would that be really wide? If so I would go with 225 if it'll run as wide as a 235 high performance tire.

I wonder if there's a site that lists actual tire widths by manufacturer/model/size?
I haven't come across one... Karl.

How does this compare to the Dunlop ZI star spec or the new ZII star spec. They get high praise and were a typical more serious street tire to the PSS

Are both of those tires mounted on wheels?

I'll rephrase the question : In the photo above, are both tires currently mounted on wheels and are those wheels the same size?

The Continental's on the left were mounted on 9.5in wheels. The Federal's were not mounted at all.
