Slight Rattle Front Engine

Just when you get the oil leaks under control (my engine bay looks pristine finally), I fired up the old girl to hear the slightest of rattle noise from the engine bay. Kinda sounds like marbles in a can but at a low pitch, also goes with the rpm when you rev the engine. The car is at 104,000km rounded up and has basically been stock besides the PPK around 60,000km and MHD stage 1 91oct map now recently. It still has stock serp belt and the pulleys. My guess is one of the pulleys might be on it's way out but being in Canada, we don't get the nice ECS kit otherwise it will be a fortune shipping it here. Just wondering if anyone has any other suggestions. I'm going to replace the belt and pulleys shortly just to eliminate that as the noise and it should be done anyways. I hope it won't require an engine rebuild. N55 platform just as a FYI.

Inspect the belt and pulleys carefully. If there is even the slightest indication of the belt being uncentered on either the tensioner or idler, replace immediately. Failure of the belt drive on these motors often wraps the belt around the crank pulley, forcing fragments past the main seal and destroying internal components.

At eight years I'd replace it all just as a matter of preemptive maintenance.

Just replaced my tensioner assembly, and the symptoms match your description pretty well.

The tensioner/idler assembly is well known to fail at roughly 70,000 miles, and your 104,000 KM's is ~65K miles- swap it out along with a new belt. Inspect your other pulleys to be sure they're in good shape.

The belt looks in perfect condition. I'll have to put my hand in there and see if I can wiggle things around. Have to let the engine cool before I stick my hand in there, it's bloody tight!

That's reassuring. Kind of want to stop putting money into maintenance items because the wifey is now looking at new vehicles. Hopefully this will get the slight rattle noise to be gone, although I do hear the suspension mounts rattle over bumps. The wifey doesn't hear them but I'm so intune with the car you can tell when something isn't right.

Others have also said that the Power Steering Pulley bolts might be loose. Give them a quick tug to make sure they're tight.

I'll have a look at that once I get everything taken apart. Might throw some locktite at it also.
