125i real-world 0-100, auto vs manual, stock vs PBX
janus and i today had a chance to lay down some proper real-world 0-100kph times, and, , how about we let the figures do the talking. temperature was about 35C (rising to 37C by the last run) and the road was flat with good traction. Timed with dynolicious (iPhone app) and cross-checked against a stopwatch. Figures are in seconds plus/minus standard deviation (outliers removed.)
Auto: stock, 1 person on board: 9.67 +/- 0.18 pbx, 1 person on board: 9.23 +/- 0.47 pbx, 2 people on board: 9.74 +/- 0.11 Manual: stock, 2 people on board: 8.53 +/- 0.45 pbx, 2 people on board: 8.34 +/- 0.35 Auto best run: 8.57 (ignore yellow line) (please) Manual best run: 7.68 What can I say, except... 1) The Injen intake sounds wicked above 6k rpm 2) Seafood risotto is yum, no matter how depressed you are 3) Those sticky rubber mat things work really well. 28/11 addendum If we assume that the iphone's gyro was miscalibrated due to the heat, the times become substantially better: see post #25. No way dudes! You should be able to get it under 7 seconds - easy!
Are you turning DTC off?

my car (auto) had dsc left on, but it never intervened. i used half normal launches (apply full throttle whilst releasing the brake) and half abuse-the-torque-converter launches (bring revs up to ~2k rpm with brakes held on, then release brake and gradually go full throttle)
janus (manual) had dsc/dtc fully switched off, with good clutch drop launches (about 1 second of mild tyre chirping) |

The weird thing is that when the results said 9 seconds, it actually felt like 9 seconds. In brisk day-to-day driving the performance feels like it's there, but on the full run to 100kph it has always felt like it runs out of puff. Today we just found out just how badly |

Must be the heat I say. 35 deg is pretty hot.
Does it feel like it's bogging down in the start or does it run out of puff higher up?

I wouldn't have expected a NA car to be affected by a 35 degree day that much. On the other hand, the 135i would be a different matter.
This is why you don't race V8's on a hot day :P

7.68 sounds really slow for that car!
160kw 270Nm and with a weight of 1400Kg, should be around 6sec...even the new GTI is faster 0-100 lol

If it is the heat, i'm really quite surprised that it would have such a dramatic impact?!?!?

That's the annoying thing. janus and I spent all of lunch scratching our heads trying to come up with a plausible reason why the times were so poor, but we couldn't think of any besides the heat. But even then, surely the heat can't affect it that badly, especially an NA engine?? he was definitely shifting fast enough, if you look at his graph above you'll see the red curve actually continues quite well, plus he only had to shift once (while I had to upshift twice) Quote:

Look forward to the cool weather re-run numbers.
Another thought.... bad batch of fuel?

How were you shifting your Auto? Manually or auto switch? Did you remember it launches in 2nd and you'll have to physically move it to M1?

Yeah, was dissapointing to get such poor results.
The car didn't feel like it was going slower than normal, though i guess dropping 15 degrees or so off the air temp might help. But still, 2 seconds?? With the injen and PBX i was hoping for around 6 sec flat. Will need to do some testing in cooler weather, be interested to see if anyone else has a chance to do some recording of their 125i's what times they get. WMJ, i was flogging the gearbox, getting a chirp into 2nd and everything, launching from around 3500rpm, not getting much wheelspin. arg. Chylld, hope you head back tonight and do some more tests, and i REALLY hope they're better than the results we just got.
