Spark Plugs - assist

So, some background (bought on 22k now 80k).
At about 30ish, no.2 coil went, replaced under w'tee along with a spark plug.

Now at 80 (and extended w'tee) and this time no.5 went, they replaced the spark plug but shouldnt have has not under w'tee.

They "said" they where trying to get all 5 coils authorized, the said my sparks where worn and I should do them at the same time as they could blow the existing coils and it could cause a problem with w'tee in future , etc etc

Cost of 5 plus around $300, I said no, and funnily enough BMW also refused all 5 coils. But they did do the coil and plug FOC.

SO, I'm going to do it myself, seen some tutorials, planning on doing a vid (when the weather warms up a bit) so some questions

* Can worn plugs blow coils ?
* at 80k are my plugs due ?
* Special tools ? I'm told a thin walled socket
* assembled DRY
* I've in the past (non BMW - but Porsche) done up by hand tight then a 1/4 turn

TIA

1. Yes; BMW says our plugs can go for 160,000 kms (72K kms for 135's) but most knowledgeable people say about 100K kms is better.
2. No
3. Believe not with our N52 engine
4. Yes
5. 1/8th turn then torque to spec in Bentley manual

As far as videos, both Bavarian Autosport and Pelican Parts put out real good DIY's.

so pulled up real oem

says the plug is NGK LZFR6AP11GS

the hex size is 5/8, this means 24mm in metric?
also there is some talk of a BMW specific plug tool.

Is this the thin walled socket? Don't mind buying this stuff in advance, theres a shop near me "Princess auto" who do a return if not satisfied policy.

txs again

Well it would seem that a thin walled socket may be required. I have Princess Auto close to me too-will look and see what they have otherwise will try NAPA or CAPS (have one very close to me).
The Bav Auto video is on an E36 engine. There are enough differences with the N52 engine, its important to watch those videos specifically on it (N52). Google N52 spark plug replacement.
My 08 N52 has 90K kms and I plan on doing my plugs this summer or next. Mike Miller recommends only plugs bought from a BMW dealer but I bought mine from Bav Auto and they are Bosch FR7NPP332. On the box they say gap should be 1.0mm or .040" and torque to 21 ft pds.
In my now 10 year old car (I've had it for 8) with 90199 kms (not winter driven) and 3 track days, I've had absolutely zero problems with coils or plugs. If the Bosch plugs give me any little problem whatsoever, then I go to BMW dealer and buy plugs.
Important points I noticed from N52 video are: 1. 1st couple of threads on new plugs should have copper based anti seize, 2. start new plug by hand until it seats, 3. special grease inside of coil boot, 4. torque spec is 18 ft pds (Bosch say 21 ft pds).

nice txs man appreciated,
doh sorry didn't see your in OTT
yes on 2 & 4, I have 18ft lbs written down from somewhere else
I'm still not sure in the copper anti-seize, as enough ppl have commented that for NGK's, they don't need them, plus one of the NGK sites say not to.
I may look at the changed plug when I remove it to see if BMW used any
Yes I have used the grease in the boots before, not something I've not seen recommended
on BMW's yet)

Replaced mine last week.

NGK was original (6) with BMW printed @insulator

ECS or FCP sent NGK highest grade replacements. I went to the NGK America site for fitment confirmation-vendor spot on

One orig presented gap@0.64 ! - others worn to 0.49-0.50

New plugs (Box end label) said don't gap (preset=one reason $15 ea?)

Cannot help myself not checking-each was 0.44

Used copper a/s. Boot dressing too. Purpose to keep moisture (leaking vc gasket oil) wicking from the well up to the contact

Originals: Up to 34 mpg cross country. Never had a misfire, no symptoms, working perfectly at 66k

They owed me nothing. Change at any time 60k+

Thin-wall 5/8" spark-plug specific tool; new is best-it will securely capture to remove the plug; dropping it will necessitate a narrow pincer retrieval tool, kinda deep there...just sayin...

Vac out each well w/narrow long-reach vac nozzle before putting a tool near the plugs

I've a nice tw but setting plugs this time was simply replicate the factory feel.

Bentley manual states: Sec. 020-47 18 ft.lb +- 2 They do not report 'gap' as NGK pre-gaps our modern world!

Copper a/s protocol same page

So I'm getting a bit hung up on the spark plug tool, help !

So I checked my tool kit and I have 2 marked as (5/8 / 16mm) but they are 6 point.

Close to me princess auto show a 12 point (5/8-16mm) but on the pic says 14mm
https://www.princessauto.com/en/deta...et/A-p8668345e

1 on amazon show
CTA Tools 2376 Spark Plug Socket, 14mm by 12-Point
https://www.amazon.ca/ABN-12-point-S.../dp/B01BUI5YEW

So I'm having a hard time seeing what is so "thin walled about this"
If the socket internals has say 14mm the round external can't be that much thinner?
I see the difference between a 6pt and 12pt, so as long as it's a 12point is this "thin walled"

I want to get the tools in advance, Princeauto do refunds without any specfic date even if used. But my problem is I dont wanna skimp on the right tool, and find I cant do the job, which will be a pain.

The part on amazon is $10 but with shipping tax and all, is more than the PA part

help !

Looks thin-walled to my eye. Assure it fits by taking one of your fresh plugs.

Burger makes the correct socket plus it has a magnet to hold the plug. Follow the torque spec on the plug's box, 17 ft-lbs after seated, and no anti-seize. According to my maintenance manual, 60K miles. I just keep an eye on the fuel mileage and how the car runs to determine change.

I purchased the socket from FCPEuro for $5. It has the standard rubber piece inside that tends to grip the plug too hard. I just connected a long 3/8" extension to the socket and used electrical tape to tape the extension to the socket. It worked great for me and you can't beat $5.

There was another post where some off-branded thin-wall sockets could be 1mm thicker than others (not easily visible to the naked eye) making them a little too wide to fit the spark plug well. Just so you know, not all thin-walled sockets are exactly the same.

I did some more research and n52 is different to the n54 (128 vs 135)
"apparently" the 128 doesn't need a specific tool
I'm actually going to see a mechanic (for my tire changes) and have words with him

(famous last words)
