2011 135 warranty ending
I'd like to have the board's opinion on my situation. My 2011 135 convertible will have the warranty expire on 10/17. It's got the 7 speed auto transmission. just now pushing 20,000 miles on it. This is not my primary driver car. Gets placed into "drydock" during winter months. Should I extend warranty or chance it? Thanks for opinions.........

These cars are fairly reliable. Those service insurance packages (branded as warranty, definitely not a warranty) are a huge gamble. The good ones cost in the ballpark of $3000+. Do the math, look at the items you think COULD go bad, and would be covered by one of those programs, and add that all up. Can you get to more than 3 grand in 2 years? I couldn't. If your engine/transmission and turbo are all healthy, I'd say skip it. Chances are it will take longer than the term of the agreement for something big to fail, and then you'll be out the cost of the service insurance, as well as the cost of the repair.
I didn't get one. Couldn't be happier with all that money in my bank instead.

^^+1 to what @ShocknAwe said above.
You might look into this SIB to update your DME sw. It will eliminate the DCT stalling issue(s). SIB 12 15 14 http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1033690 Also... the turbos are covered up to 8 years or 80K miles. So you should be ok. I would also have your dealer check on any open recalls(B-pillar insulation, battery cable, etc) on your car -while its in the shop.

Buy an extended service plan. When things break, they are expensive. Most dealerships offer 0 interest financing for their service contracts. So say you pay 3k for an extra 4 years. You give 10% down and pay about 150 a month for 18 months.
Go with a big company, Gulf states, BMW, Ally etc. It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

Just got off the phone with the finance manager at my local BMW dealer. This is what he told me.
Extended warranty, BMW Platinum plan - $3350.00, not negotiable 3 years, bumper to bumper, minus wear and tear items $50 deductible per incident No thanks. My warranty expires this October but I'll save the money instead and take my chances. I wanted peace of mind but that piece is too expensive. Didn't ask about the mileage because mine is low anyway.

Is your convertible top working perfectly? If anything goes wrong with that it's about 5 grand parts and labor. I had my entire top replaced (under warranty) due to a few failed rear defroster wires.

I did the $2,000 Route 66 warranty for my new purchase (2008 135i - 65k miles). My biggest concern was engine destruction, VANOS failure, or turbo replacement.
The HPFP and turbos are covered till 82k miles. I looked through the receipts and noticed the HPFP and injectors were recently done already which basically leaves the turbos as the big ticket item. On the drive back, I though I recognized the wastegate rattle which means I might be in luck to get them done before the factory recall expires. At the moment I am debating the Route 66 warranty and whether to keep it. After reviewing through coverages packet, they definitely exclude a lot of things. For example, 'seepage' is not covered which means if an oil leak starts (say due to a rear main seal, valve cover, etc.) it sounds like they would not cover it. Or if ANY leak started they would not cover it. There are so many stipulations that it sounds even like if the turbos did go or a VANOS bolt failed, they'd most likely find a reason to not cover it. I've found a few threads and experiences were people have said they've gotten Route 66 to cover repairs, but reading this contract... I'm definitely in a bit of a debate. Open to discussions with other drivers in the same boat!

Happy to help. I hate seeing people get screwed over by scam artists out for a quick buck. With the way these companies write their exclusion lists, that's all it is.

What would have you had them do that they've covered (and not covered?)

Extended warranties are always, on average, a very good deal for the seller, not you. You gamble that your car is unusually bad in reliability when you buy one.
That said, I think it matters what happens if this happens. In other words, if your car is unusually unreliable - breaks down a lot - is that a PITA for your or worse than that? My mom bought one because she is living on a fixed income and didn't want to face big repair bills. Then Walmart didn't put oil in the car after draining it and both Walmart and the warranty company failed to step up and fix the car. I think that one is on Walmart but my point is that the only logic I see for the extended warranty is it helps you avoid major repair bills. Most of the time, you will be money ahead to decline. Your bills will be less than the warranty (which is why they make so much money on them).

You should always self insure on items that if they break do not in any way affect your lifestyle to repair them. It's like going to Las Vegas and you own the casino. Invest the money and you will, in the long run, always win.

I am in the same situation and trying to weigh the pros/cons of letting it expire or paying ~3k for 3 more years of additional coverage. I need to do a little more research on what exactly the Gold coverage applies to
