Dealer gouging for parts??

Just want to replace my chewed up jack pad and the dealer wants $25 berore taxes for just 1 pad- really? Everywhere I check on line MSRP is around only $15. Same thing for the oil filter- over $25 at dealer. I would just order everything on line but my discount gets wiped out with shipping costs for these smaller items..grrr
any suggestions?

I paid $15.08 each for a set of four from my dealer. $60.32, plus tax $4.83, total $65.15.
Part number 51-71-7-237-195

He's probably looking at shipping too.

I went with fleabay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-JACK-PAD..._Tools&vxp=mtr

They're $10 cheaper now than when I bought them.

I think he's looking to buy lifting pads, the kind that come on the car that are used with a car lift. Not jack pads, that are used on a car jack. I think this because he's trying to buy them from the dealer, and that he might be incorrectly calling them jack pads. Maybe I'm wrong. OP, which one is it, jack pads or lifting pads?

A lot of dealers "bump" the MSRP of the parts: 10, 20, or 30%... They do it so they make more money and so when the "squirrels" like us come knocking... they can give us a "20%" discount and STILL be making more money than the original MSRP! Best thing is shop around and find a dealer that doesn't price gouge. Then buy your parts from them and build up a relationship. One day they might really be able to help you out!

You're right. My bad.

I would be interested to see how many BMW dealers there are in OP's region. Maybe only one in San Antonio? Thus they don't feel the need to compete with anyone on price.

Suggestion. Quit wasting energy and time fuming about something you have utterly no power over. Corporations (and your dealership surely is one), or individuals can charge whatever they want for a product. Your only choice is whether or not to buy from them.

Sometimes "the market" works, sometimes it doesn't. In this case, for you, it doesn't, likely because they have no competition other than online. It's a well known thing in economics, the term is "market failure". There are others. It's why we have Public Utilities Commissions.

My local dealer does what Dackelone says: discounts from huge markup over MSRP. It is less expensive for me to buy parts from Tischer BMW (http://www.getbmwparts.com) and pay for shipping, than it is to buy them from the local dealer that is a few miles from my house.

Same for me. I get better pricing from Tischer and importing the parts into Canada, than I do from my own dealership group that I get "employee" pricing at.

'Support lifting platform' is the actual real name...

Fuming? Wasting time? I'm neither....It was just a simple question to see if this is common practice which I'm finding it is- at least in my neck of the woods.
Thanks

Dackel
I wish it was marked up only 30%. More like 90-100% mark up on this particular item here in South Texas. I called the Austin Dealer today and they wanted even more money! - almost $30 for one pad before taxes. I guess you really gotta pay to play. Off to Tischer I go....
Thanks for the replies everybody.

Haha same here. Needed a guide support for a damper, $7 online, dealer wanted $25. Over 300% markup.

Touch up paint? They wanted $150.

Then why didn't you just called them that in the first place? It would've avoided the confusion. Especially since there is something else called "jack pad."

Because I didnt bother to write it down when looking it up on line. No big deal man. Who here actually calls it 'support lifting platform' anyway? Sorry for any confusion- problem solved BTW, what else is called jack pad? Do you mean jack pad adapter?

Well, there's the support lifting platform, that I mistakenly called lifting pad, which I gave you the part number for: 51-71-7-237-195

Then there's the jack pad, that 135ivert sent you the link to buy from ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-JACK-PAD..._Tools&vxp=mtr

It's always good to reference the part number, if you have it. Otherwise, no problem man. Just trying to help you out.

I got an SLP, a.k.a. lift pad, installed for $16.32 including tax at a dealer tech inspection day back in June. Tech inspection was free and no labor charged for the install. That's how to make your customer happy.
