DS answer
OK so BMW does not publish a figure hence 67 people have read this and no one had an answer. Searching all thru BMW forums and google also did not reveal an answer. DS answer is to use 2 gallons of anti-freeze mixed with 2 gallons distilled water should give 50/50 ratio and proper protection.

According to a Bentley manual, the capacities are as follows:
N51, N52, N54 engines: - Manual transmission: 8.2L - Automatic transmission: 8.4L However, this is for the E9x 3-series. I am not sure if the 1 series will be the same. I assume some of the cooling system hoses or other cooling system components in the 1 series may be different from the 3 series which could ultimately change the total coolant capacity.

Ok thats good to know. Bentley says the E46 engines have a capacity of 8.4L. Now, using 2 US gallons of antifreeze is 7.56 L and that seems a bit too much. Half of 8.2L is 4.1 so would seem we need just a bit more than 1 US gallon.

I drained and filled my coolant a couple of weeks ago on my manual 128i. I bought two gallons of BMW coolant (and two gallons of distilled water) and I didn't use it all. If I recall, I used all of one jug of coolant, and needed a bit more from the second.
I would buy two jugs of the coolant though so you've got enough to keep the proper mix ratio, and have some on hand for topping up the coolant. If following the BMW procedure, there is still a little bit of coolant left in the system when you drain it. This may not be a bad thing though as supposedly you should not let the water pump dry out. Should be noted that you also need to premix the coolant and water before adding it, straight coolant is supposedly bad for the electric water pump. |
