Playing games in the off-season
So, what do people use in the offseason for fun/practice? I am looking to get a racing wheel and the "right" software. I have heard iRacing and Project Cars are good. Anyone have software or a racing wheel they recommend? Currently looking at the Logitech 920 or the Thrustmaster 300. Thx!

I'm in name boat, any advice would be great.
My two cents: iracing - great simulator definitely need a decent wheel t300 or Logitech g920 or better and a gaming computer will help. Main dislike time consuming to do races and make progress. Though I felt like it did improve my driving in real life at the track by making me more aware. Plus it gets the adrenaline going especially when finishing a race first because of the difficulty and any incident has such a race ending effect. I also think quality of online players is great vs others games due to the safety rating. Read the the reviews of Grand Turismo Sport on Amazon seems to be a huge disappointment. |

I'm on a console (Xbox One) and I have the Logitech G920 with 3 pedal and shifter setup. The main games I play are Assetto Corsa and Project Cars 2. Assetto Corsa is a really good sim racing game and gives you really good feedback and feel when playing. I will say though that it would be better to play AC on a computer because you have more options with vehicles, tracks and support than on a console. I go to a VR lounge close to my house and that is the sim game of choice there as they also use the hydraulic rigs and the feel is intense.
With PC2, I would say that the feel is a bit more realistic and you are more involved on that one. Tire warm up on outlaps, heel/toe work and fuel consumption. I also have a Playseat Evolution seat to go with the G920 setup.

Thx for the comments...good to not be alone! I purchased Asseto Corsa and it seems good. The Xbox wheel I dug out of the kids closet is not going to cut it, tho. I am playing on PC with triple monitors.

So, I just won this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/WheelStand-...72.m2749.l2649
Wheel isn't high end but I really just wanted the stand anyway and the price was OK. Now the shipping wait...

My verdict is that Asetto Corsa with a decent wheel is usable, although I think the 1M model is a bit slippery and definitely harder to control over or understeer than my actual 135i. Still, a good, fun way to practice skills IMO.

I also run AC, tons of mods for the game and with the right wheel setup and settings it feels great

Yeah...I ended up upgrading to a TM T300S with the 599EVO wheel and T3PA pro pedals on a next level racing stand...makes a huge difference if you are trying to get a "real" feel out of the sim.

If anyone is considering a VR headset...you may want to try it out first. I tried my son's Occulus (the "preferred" headset for racing in a lot of sim racing circles) and while I was very impressed with the immersion, the resolution in this generation of headsets makes it unusable for me over a triple monitor setup. YMMV, but for me, I'll wait and see what the Vive Pro looks like when it comes out...

Few years ago I had a nice 3 27" monitor setup with the Fanatec entry-level seat and a Fanatec Porsche wheel and pedals.
I always did iRacing, once you get your IR score up, you get out of the races with all the Frittatas that can't drive and start actually getting some good racing going. I plan on building another setup once the price of video cards comes back down from all the Crypto-mining bros lose interest. |
