$140 for intake cleaning...about right?

Car has all of 28 k miles on it.
90% of the time I'm local driving. Week ends i hit the high ways and push her.
Just went in for the service because the car said so an the manager tells me that the tech is recommending a $140 air intake cleaning?
Sounds ok but what do you think?

Oh and $170 for allignemnt? Lots less work but costs more? WTF?

What is involved in an air intake cleaning? Is he talking about cleaning the intake valves? If so $140 is a smoking deal.

If he is just talking about replacing the air filter or spraying something down the throttle body, seems very high.

given the cost, my money is on that. They would probably armor all it for an extra $50.

$140 for an air intake cleaning is a waste of money. It's replacing your filters, maybe spraying some antibacterial/antifungal in there.

The intake valve cleaning (the walnut shell blasting) cleans the valves and your intake manifold. My dealer asked about $800 for the service. A local shop does the same thing and only wants about $500. That would clean the carbon deposits off, but if the car isn't high mileage, it's a waste of money. I'm at 60K miles and only starting to think about doing it now.

BMW charges around $800-$1000, if your dealer has the equipment. I got in a GB in Chicago (Performance shop) and it was only $399.

I wouldn't get an alignment at that price, either. Go to Sears and get it done for $79.

it sounds like the dealership is quoting the intake valve cleaning for non-direct injection engines (e46's, for example). a proper intake valve cleaning job (scrubbing the valves or blasting the valves) will run minimum of $400 IMHO

It really sounds like they're going to pop the air box clips (~10 seconds) and vaccuum out debris from underneath the filter(~1 minute). Sounds fishy to me, ask them exactly what the $140 job entails, because what it sounds like they're doing is easier than opening your car's door, getting in, and going for a drive.

I personally wouldn't go to Sears. Maybe the ones near you are better, but I got tires mounted at sears and they installed a set of clearly marked directional tires backwards, overfilled the tires by a LOT (despite telling them exactly what PSI I wanted), and then tried to charge me to fix their mistakes.

I'm pretty sure it's not a blasting service. If any of you are in SoCal, here is a group buy that is available.

That's one guy's mistake, though. Of course, they shouldn't have been trying to charge you to fix it.

Anyway, yes, I've had far better luck with them.
