Questions about detailing equipment

So I have some pretty decent swirls from poor washing technique and instead of paying someone to correct my paint every 3-4 months I decided to learn how to wash properly (which I've done) and purchase my own tools to detail. I've decided on the Porter 7424 for mainly the price and great reviews. I'm basically curious which pads/polishes/waxes you recommend. Also what are the best mitts and drying towels for washing?

Thanks

Oh by the way it's BSM so any recommendations for this paint to really pop would be nice too

I highly suggest the 3 bucket system with a foam gun to limit swirls. I as well just tried going to the next stage. I am using a Griot's 6" orbital with Uber pads (yellow, green, black) and Meguiars Ultimate compound, polish and liquid wax which has been good so far. If I was to start over I might have gone Griots or Menzerna polishes instead. Cheers

Get on autogeek and start reading. You'll learn all the information you need on that site.

My recommendation is PC with Meguiars 105/205. By far the best combination out on the market. For pads Lake County Hydropads (Cyan and Tangerine) are paired nicely to cut and finish down.

I buy my mitts and MF towels from detailedimage.com

This guy knows his stuff. Go with his suggestion.

This two-step process (cutting polish for getting rid of moderate swirling and light polish for finishing) will give you the results you're looking for.

I used the 105/205 combo on my DSBM 1er. Go with the pad choices above. Yellow for 105, and green for 205

Result:

Warning, the clear is very soft, when wiping away the polish you risk marring the paint. Spritz some isopropyl alcohol diluted with water (50/50) onto the mf towel you use to wipe off polish. It will greatly reduce the marring.

Good Luck!

How do you like the Chemical Guys stuff? I'm debating on what polish I should get. I'm going back and forth between the Chemical Guys polish and the Menzerna polishes.

Thanks Zombie1, too much money spent though =P

I was thinking after I'm done with my Meguiars to switch to Menzerna.

Litebulb,

What tools do you use for your soft top? Horse hair brushes and RaggTopp cleaners?

Every wash 303 Fabric Convertible Top Cleaner with a KIWI soft horsehair brush (don't brush in circles!). Then every few months, after the wash I throw on 303 High Tech Fabric Guard and let it dry overnight.

Cheers!
