2002 for sale on BaT

Just scrolling through and came across this on Bring-a-Trailer.

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1976-bmw-2002-72/

This 1976 BMW 2002 is a square-taillight example that was reportedly refurbished under previous ownership between 2008-2013. Features include a color change to red over a custom two-tone interior, a 2.0L M10 inline-four paired with a 4-speed manual transmission, Weber carburetors, Bilstein shocks, a front air dam, Minilite-style wheels, and more. The current owner acquired the car in 2016 and has driven it approximately 500 miles, replacing the clutch and driveline fluids in 2017. This 2002 is offered on consignment by the selling dealer with a clean Arizona title.

(No relation to the seller.).

2002 prices are through the roof these days, but this is not one I'd consider unless it goes very cheap. Missing trim, panel alignment is sketchy, overspray on the oil pan, driving lights out of whack, and who knows what else. Ownership history suggests a flipper looking to make a few bucks too, so forget about getting answers to important questions.

I love these cars but the price tags lately are insane for what they are. If I were to snag a classic I'm fairly sure it'd be an older 3 series at this point. I love me some e30!

The closest E30 analog to the 2002 is the 1991-only 318is. Good luck finding one - they're a cult classic at this point, and rare. An often overlooked option is the E21, which can be made to be very capable, but needs more work out of the box to get there. Prices on those are still fairly low.

I wouldn't need the 318is, even a regular 318 would be fine for me. I'd be doing some restomod work to it either way so I'd rather not bastardize an IS.

In 1994 I bought my first BMW and it was a used 1991 BMW 318is. Diamond black with tan leatherette. Was only available with a 5 speed gear box. car had 78K on it and I kept it till 155K. Loved it.
