Let the shenanigans begin 1M clone plus S65
Here it starts my 1M clone plus build.
A couple years back I was bitten by the bimmer bug and bought a 330ci without a motor and trans. It went through a zhp motor swap then a s54 swap. I loved it and it was all good for the track days but was looking for a fresher look. I had a VW Mk6 GTI 6sp for a daily, but my purist rwd made me long for a better DD. I traded my GTI for a auto E91. That did not last long so it got a n55 and manual swap from a 2011 135i. I was going to use that chassis for my clone but too many things went sideways so it got the full part out. I sold my e46 and found my black sport 128i slicktop and was truly impressed by it in stock form.... Long live NA power!. Currently its has headers, axle back exhaust, and 3stage IM, 135 brakes/master and wheels(waiting for apex to deliver group buy). What are the plans. Well the new chassis is going to go oem 1M fenders/bumpers, the clone works. I am not going to be original but the guys who did the s65 swaps I will follow. I chose this car cause it was a slicktop also, I'm 6'5" on a good day and like the extra headroom. The fact that the partout will pay for the chassis is a plus to the only real out of pocket cost is the build not the original chassis. The project will take a bit of time but I will do my best to get pics up and chronicle the journey Last edited by gixracer; 08-03-2017 at 09:50 PM.. |

Spent some time doing a little tear down, front core support is trashed along will belly pan. Drive line should be out soon. Priority is to get the unused stuff sold to pay off the chassis.

I have come to realize that cars are like tools besides being an extension of our personas. The previous owner of this car was a pig. It took me a good 45 minutes to just vacuum out the car, even with the seats out. The cup holders and front tray were absolutely disgusting.
Next thing why are headliners $1400 dollars retail, please tell me why? I have decided to have it fixed/repaired by an apolsterer. Took some time cleaning the seats but need to have a soft brush to complete the process. The black hair dye on the headrests was nasty. Last edited by gixracer; 05-05-2017 at 01:02 PM.. |

Motors out, but the engine bay needs massive cleaning. I learned a new trick that only cost me 3 minutes of time but saved 10 minutes of wrestling. Not only did I take the top nuts off the motor mounts I removed the bolts on the bottom of the mount. As I lifted the motor and knocked the mounts out of the way. So much easier and stopped from scraping the cloth heat shield up.
Anybody ready for a 128i manual swap ? Here's a couple of pics for reference |

Don't know if it's really luck, but thanks
It's going to take time and cash When the donor comes it will be pretty straight forward. It can't be anywhere electrically complicated as splicing a n52/n54 auto harness to a n55 with manual. On a side note the apple does not fall far from the tree when a family chassis sits next to another. It's like legos and finding the right piece to fit. Things change in a hurry. My wagon sold after getting noticed on Jalopnik.com so the S65 M3 search began. I found one and got it for the right price. 48k miles on the odo. It's 2008 that got tboned but left what I needed untouched.
So I'm using the complete front and rear subframe, engine trans diff, dsc, gauge cluster, steering wheel, brake master cylinder, wheels( temporarily), exhaust and misc. wiring. The rest of it will be for sale. |

I will begin with the fact that I took two days off work to get some work done on the car. man was I tired after day 1.
So the motor removal is ridiculous on the M3 because of the power steering hose that wraps around the front three times, but otherwise its a straight removal after the wire harness and grounds are disconnected. The exhaust was easy because the mounts are a bolted in and you dont have to pry the rubber hangers off to remove it. Disconnecting the mid section that has the cats was a treat. Normally on N54/N55/N52 headers the studs are pressed in to the header. They normally snap if they have seen any water or corrosion. The s65 sections have their own bolts that come out and can be replaced easily if there are issues. When the motor was being removed the loops came in handy for the leveler. As the subframe started to drop down off the car the motor started to cant. The left motor mount was separated and broken. This just meant one less nut to get the two apart later. Subframes were the standard affair. Noted though is the that the M3 subframes have the extra wings behind the motor. The E82 chassis has the holes ready to go for the mounts!!!! i was looking at euro 118i pics and some have an additional V brace that hook up to those holes. I swear BMW secretly has more than one or two S65 1M's laying around. The amount that the E8x chassis interchange parts is staggering. Notes for the build and observations. Front wire harness is going to pulled and parts will transferred over. There is a seperate pump for the brake master cylinder with wiring and another sensor. Obviously the entire Brake master and booster are getting swapped. The fuel lines and the rear brake lines run on the ouside of the left frame rail to the back. The fan control wiring is larger because of the higher output. Notably the cooling system will swap in just the same but I will look into how the oil cooler assembly will mount into the 1M body work. Other small things. 135i front wheels do not clear M3 brakes but the rears do. On the rears the 10mm difference in hub spacing it very noticable and leave a ton of options for concave wheels on the rear. I'm going to post more pics later because i used the real camera for the teardown pics here a couple teasers. also props to Marco (ilikebmxbikes)for the phone conversation the other night the info is going to help quite a bit. So I've been getting a bunch of work done on the donor E90 M3 lately. I have been working on it because I need the room to work on the clone and having one less car in the garage is easier.
I've seen a bunch of threads about swaps and stuff showing pretty things only after adding. I'm going to focus this one a bit on the the dirty side and technical issues I have the harness out of the m3 and gong to get ready to start tracing what I need and what's redundant. Using Ista will be a godsend because 98% of the wiring is the same between cars. Here's a couple of shots M3 wheels fit with a little bit of poke and another shot of the harness laid out. Subscribed for an awesome thread - can't wait to see the outcome.
Please keep a log of what was required to be bought beyond the "donor" car! Cheers Mark

Right now it's a bare shell, I have a bunch of interior and doors left.
The idea is to actually have the donor cost me about $5-6k for what I need motor trans subframes and etc. selling it as whole isn't really possible given how much is going into the clone. |

Wow what a long weekend. I ordered parts on Wednesday from the dealer because the moratorium was lifted that I couldn't get parts till the wedding was done.
Good news is that I was able to order pretty much everything I needed for around $4700 for the exterior and non specialty stuff. Bad news.....they don't have the cheaper quarters available and they may not ever have them. There are two other options available but at 2X the price, the full c pillar version actually has less material and is smaller. My VAC cage came in from another member here. It's ready to go but it will be modified to be permanent instead of bolt in. Now that the there is no shell in the garage I will be able to get some work done. My priority is the back firewall for the next day or so. I have to but the V8 clutch line in because it has heat shielding around it. There are a couple of nut inserts that have to be put in to hold the left cooling pipe on the frame rail. The other one will be to hold the trans cooler line in the right firewall. these normally are the threaded posts on the M3 but they are not present on the 128 or 135. They are spot welded in at the factory but the nut inserts will be cleaner with bolts. After this is done the motor will go in. I will put some pics in from the rotted motor mounts that were separated when I pulled the motor. I have a cheap replacements to try till i make up my mine on how stiff I'm going to go. When I did my S54 in my E46 I used Vorschlag mounts. The were responsive with a big amount of NVH until the idle was bumped 200 RPM. After the motor is in the wiring part will start. I plan on removing the dash to access the front part of the harness to make it look as OEM as possible. |

Sorry to hear about the fender complications. I dread taking on this project in the future. Looks like everything else is coming along nicely though!
