Aftermarket Paint Job

Anyone considering getting their 1er painted a color not originally offered by BMW? It could be a drastic change, or maybe something more subtle, such as simply a different shade of of an already offered color.

x2, not financially smart unless you plan on keeping the car for a very long time to where the price differential would not be too great...

Hugely expensive - you have do do the whole car, if it is going to look good. Under the trunk and hood, inside the doors, the engine compartment. The sunroof and windows have to be completely removed, all the trim taken off. That is major work, it will cost at least $5k, maybe more.

It can be done, but unless by a high quality shop, you will be sorry. And it better look better than factory after you are finished. At least stick with a BMW color that isn't offered on the 1 series.

I understand you can get any BMW OEM color nowadays, for around $5k. It would have to be a very special order, just a few CA's can get them, and while the palette is still somewhat limited at least would come from the factory.

Check it out, there are a few E92 M3's with non-standard colors on the M3 forum, such as Laguna Seca Blue etc.

If I can't get over this egg stain on my hood, Laguna Seca Blue, Ruby Red, one of the Porsche Forest Green colors, or some sort of purple...

in my case, when i painted the FD, i removed the engine, interior, etc... cost me $1100 to paint the car... that also includes bondo to shave the mirrors, rear red lights, antenna and the holes where the widebody was... it was much easier than i thought, however i'm sure not shaving anything or removing dents/holes would be much easier... i don't see how painting the car another factory BMW color would hurt resale... perhaps question the car history, but it's not like you couldn't provide evidence otherwise...

its not necessarily the difference in color. seeing an aftermarket paintjob, one might wonder, "is this a professional job?" "did they remove everything they were supposed to before painting?" - stuff like that

i know if i were to put $30k+ on a car that had an aftermarket paintjob, i would want to know who did it, why, what kind of paint, etc... seems like a reasonable request...

exactly - thats what i'm trying to say; one would want to know those things. however, someone who doesn't even want to deal with all those questions would just seek out a different car.

Some day when you are older and wiser you will skake your head when you tell your friends "remember the year I spent 10K to paint a brand new car". Trust me, you will.
