Carmax warranty

Hello,

I'm in the process of getting a 2011 135i 6spd 63K m-sport without nav through carmax. Coming from a few e46 and a e83.

They are offering the following warranty in the pic.

Would it be a wise decision to buy their warranty?

I'll probably keep the car mostly stock

It's not a problem for me to fix anything that goes wrong. I have all the tools, but kinda don't want to worry about major things like the engine, turbo or clutch\transmission.

After seeing what Doug DeMuro has said about the carmax warranty, I'm leaning towards getting it. I'm just not sure which deductible I should go for.

I'd go with the $300 deductible.

Ehhhhh.

I bought my car from Carmax with 50k miles and no warranty. It's been almost 3 years and 27k miles. I've spent maybe $1500 in repairs, and half of that could have easily been DIY'd for far less.

Unless the car is in really rough shape and you're a bad luck Bryan, I don't see your repair costs breaking even with the warranty price.

I remember some people on the forums' best advice: skip the warranty, keep $1k-$3k in the bank in the event of any needed repairs.

Here is the car that I have reserved.

I notice the steering wheel trim, shift knob and climate control face need to be replaced ~$250 in parts. Overall it looks to be in pretty good condition to me. lmk if you see something out of wack.

I would probably go for it, $300 deductible. Any idea what's already been done on it? If oilpan gasket is still the original, and coils and water pump are still original, no brainer. Is your car a manual or DCT? If its a DCT, run the ac on "max" and see if it has the very rough idle.

I bought a 2011 135i 6MT with 29k miles in 2015 with the CarMax warranty. The coverage paid for itself in less than a year in the form of a number of run-of-the-mill repairs, like a failed water pump, worn control arm bushing, a tired starter and a few other things.

I'd personally shoot for the $150 deductible up to 100k miles. The $300 deductible might encourage you to defer repairs or maintenance, which negates the purpose of the service contract meaning the company wins and you lose. When I had the warranty, the deductible was per service visit as opposed to line item, so I had plenty covered during each trip to my mechanic's shop. Another plus was that my plan was valid at any ASE certified repair facility, which included my trusted independent BMW specialist. It was also transferable, which meant I got an above market price when I sold the car a few years later.

I personally wouldn't own one of these cars without some kind of warranty like this. I actually purchased another, similar contract for my current DCT 135i.

By the way, I just looked at the photos of the saved car. If you play your cards right, CarMax will replace the worn steering wheel trim, shift knob, and climate control button panel for free.

The figures you quoted equate to anywhere from 25% to 75% of the total outlay needed for the warranty, which will continue to cover repairs after it has paid for itself.

Little update.

I bought the car and got the warranty with the $150 deductible after I smelled burning oil after driving the car.

Right now have a 30 day warranty with Carmax and they will fix mostly everything that is wrong with the car, so they say.

I'm not really sure if I trust them as they completely missed the valve cover leak.
They fixed something in the ventilation duct work and they didn't secure the windshield cowl back down correctly either.

There seems to be a noticeable miss fire at idle too, but no codes show up. I'm going to assume the spark plugs need to be replaced after 62k miles.

Clutch doesn't slip but feels a little rough.

Should I wait and take this to a BMW dealership for them to fix or just give it back and have Carmax fix it?

If I were you I'd take it to get a PPI sort of inspection from an independent shop.

Some of these things you've described can be docked up as wear and tear/maintenance items.

Carmax isn't going to be replacing spark plugs or bushings etc.

Again, I'd pay ~$100 for a proper inspection and see what the car may need soon. From what you've described so far, all of those things are expected (aside from a misfire) with these cars at that mileage. I bought mine from carmax with 50k miles and replaced the spark plugs, valve cover and water pump within the first 8 months. Wasn't fun, but comes with the territory with these cars

I notice my n55 occasionally dips RPM with maxac (presumably when compressor kicks on). What does rough idle with max ac mean?

Sorry I'm

Glad you got the warranty. You can't put a price on piece of mind.

Both the 1ers here got aftermarket warranty. One with Carmax and one from a company Fields BMW uses.

My shop has worked with both and they say the claim process is nice and smooth with both.

Sorry for the late reply. I returned the warranty and got a full refund.

The car isn't my daily driver and I will do my own work, which I enjoy doing.

I thought I had a valve cover leak, but it ended up being engine detailer burning off.

I replaced the spark plugs, brake rotors and pads.

To do list:
Shocks and struts (Bilstein B6)
Rollers, tensioners, and belt
Water pump
