Resistance while starting in reverse

Weird problem started today, hoping somebody has some ideas what it could be.

When I first tried reversing out of the garage today the car was sort of stuck, as if the brakes were on until I gave it enough gas at which point the car sort of released and popped free with a clunk and started reversing as normal. No issues while driving until trying to reverse out of the parking stall after work today. Same thing, it's as if the brakes or something are somehow stuck until I power through it at which point it pops free with a clunk and there is no further resistance.

Manual transmission btw...

Any ideas? I'll call BMW tomorrow and let you know what they say.

does the 1 series have hill assist like the Mini Coopers?

Ya it does have hill assist, can this fail and apply the brakes while in reverse?

How long had it been sitting in the garage? Im away during the week and can only drive mine on weekends, and last weekend when I pulled it out I had a similar experience.

Sounds like rust/sticking of the rears to me.

Hill assist does work in reverse as well if needed. But if it's not that, did you by any chance wash your car recently? I've had the brakes stick a bit the first time backing out after washing the car the previous day. This wasn't on 1er FWIW.

It was only parked overnight, less than 12 hrs. It did it 3 times yesterday, the shortest time between driving and moving it being 2hrs and today backing out to drive to work there was no issue. I'd rather it be consistant so I know the dealer could reproduce the problem if I take it in.

No I didn't wash the car, temperatures were around -15c.

Could the park brake be sticking?

It’s got to be the emergency (park) brake. Mine does it too and i have a manual. I usually would just give my car a little gas in reverse to push the car out of my garage then let it roll the rest of the way down the drive. Now i have to push it in reverse. Not all the time but mostly when it sits over night. I have only had one time it clunked. I am going to take it to the dealer soon to have it fixed along with a couple of other things.

I've had this happen on other cars, but generally after being parked in wet/humid conditions for a longer period of time - seemed to be the parking brake cable.

You might try parking without engaging the parking brake (in gear or "Park") and see if that helps. If so, the dealer will know where to look.

I left the parking brake off this week to see if that was what had done it to me last week. I get home tomorrow night, and I'll post whatever happens.

Today I didn't do anything different and had no issues at all. There was a big temperature difference as it was around +5c out today.

Pulled mine out of the garage last night and had no clunking noise, no sticking...nothing. It was decently warm in the garage, but it had been sitting since last Sunday (albeit without the parking brake on).

Im guessing it was my parking brake the last time, so no worries.
