I'm in for everything. Let's just make sure to fix the September date a few months earlier, because I have to hand in my vacation time.

Only date I have no time because of a friends wedding is 20th/21st of september.

Sounds great. Let's meet up in Bern then. Friday sounds great. Maybe we can head over east from the loop on Saturday, towards Stelvio via Gotthard Lukmanier / Splügen / Julier / Albula / Fluela pass. And I haven't been at Grossglockner either.

That is if you are fine with company.

Maybe a few people want to join us?

I'll be in Bern on Thursday night so heading over to the loop on Friday morning. The loop will take most of the day.

Where do people fancy for Sat & Sun? Could start heading east and cover Fluela / Albula / Julier / Spulga / Brenner Passes and Gurglerstrasse?

All depends on how far people want to drive in a day?

Okay, then I'll book something in or near Bern aswell for Thursday, so we can head to the passes on Friday.

Friday to Saturday, I suggest a stay in or near Andermatt. Then head east on saturday via Operalp Pass / Lukmanier / San Bernardino / Splügen / Julier / (Albula). That itself are quite a few passes to drive and I'm not sure we should do more. So maybe stay in or near St. Moritz for the night. That pretty much covers half of Switzerland.

Sunday could be a small loop over Albula / Fluela / Stelvio / Gurglerstraße... And then I'm actually a bit lost. Großglockner is still some way to go, but between Grossglockner on Monday evening and Stelvio sunday noon is still a lot of time. It's possible to quickly go there, but I think that is not the point. Are there must-drive roads "behind" Stelvio towards Großglockner? It's possible to go through Sella Ronda (but that skips Gurglerstraße) to go towards Großglockner... any more ideas for sunday / monday?

Who else wants to join us?

Yes, i’ve a hotel booked on the loop. It is the Gasthaus Pension zum Turm in Hospental. It is at the base of the St Gotthard Pass. Which means we can check in and then head to the passes.

I put together a few rough routes for the Saturday and Sunday, but currently i’m sat 25 miles from home waiting for recovery. I’ve a broken crankshaft pulley.

Hi, yes, sorry. Got a bit sidetracked due to the car breaking down. Are you on Whatsapp? If so, PM me your number and i’ll give you the hotel information i have so that you can book your room(s).

I’m going to try and do some route suggestions for the Saturday and Sunday. I’ll also post up the route for the Friday

Days 3 & 4 - Saturday / Sunday (360 miles / 9 hours driving time)

Day 5 - Monday (130 miles / 3 hours driving time) would see us head over to the Grossglockner. The hotel is at the peak, so you can drive the Grossglockner at night time, numerous times, if you wish There is quite a lot to explore on the Grossglockner and it can get quite busy, so can easily spend half a day there.

I will email you the routes in BMW format (assuming you have nav?) so you can just upload them via USB. I can also provide in Garmin / TomTom format as well.

Piece of advice:

Firstly, keep an eye on the status of mountain passes by using for example this website (it's in German but easy to understand; use Google Translate in case of doubt):
https://www.alpen-journal.de/alpenpaesse

Secondly, if you're inexperienced regarding mountain driving, try to limit trips to 7 hours of driving estimated on paper. In reality it's more time because of stops for food, fuel and pictures. Most start to struggle with focus and fatigue around 7 hours of mountain driving. Don't underestimate the differences in height, speed, turning, weather (sun heat) and - most of all - the road conditions and driving circumstances challenging your concentration and stamina/endurance. Personally, I can drive up to 12 consecutive hours in the mountains (actually, sunset is my reference point for ending a day trip - darkness quickly kicks in after sunset).

Last but not least, keep it safe. Mountain driving is an exercise in self-control and concentration. It ain't no game, competition or race. Mistakes can cost you dearly. Happy motoring !

Totally agree 200 miles / 8 hours is the maximum I think. Anything other than that and you're cutting into your rest time. As you say, pictures, food and fuel all add time, but also to add, traffic jams, road works, slow moving vehicles and closed roads. Every year we've had a closed road and been forced to back track for a few miles and find a different route. That could easily add an extra hour to the driving day.

This website is also good for pass conditions; https://www.adac.de/reise_freizeit/v...n/default.aspx

I'm back from my trip. Too bad you couldn't make it, mjn77 - it was quite an adventure.

I started on tuesday and headed towards Basel, staying with friends. Next day was a drive through the swiss country side towards Vierwaldstätter Lake with a stay at the Hotel Klausenpasshöhe. On Thursday In continued south, trying to get up a closed Sustenpass, then Grimsel/Furka and finally Gottardo. On Friday I skipped passes due to Tour de Suisse, and Saturday I went up Stelvio for the first time in my live - including unexpected snow with summer tires (not nice).

I took tons of pictures and flew the drown and recorded with the action cam. I will compile a selection in the following weeks to share with you.

Nice

I was wondering where the photos were!

Hopefully next spring / summer. I've been keeping an eye on the webcams around the passes and weather looks good at the moment.

I don't go until next Thursday. But thunderstorms are forcast for then.
