Weird Broken Speedometer - What are my options?
Ok, another weird one here:
About 9 months ago, my speedometer on the cluster of my 09' 135i started acting up. Basically, 'zero' is now anywhere between 160kph and 250kph depending on the day (changes every time I start the car), and as I drive, the needle goes up as expected until it literally hits and ticks against my fuel gauge. Never been in an accident or anything that would contribute to a strange issue like this. Has anyone seen this before, and if so, is there anything I can do to fix this? Also, I am in Toronto so if the conclusion is that there is nothing I can do, then any suggestions on where to get it fixed would be much appreciated. Thanks, Marv

I don't know how to fix your gauge but I have noticed others saying they changed gauges so getting a cluster from the wrecking yard might be an option. I do not use my speedometer, however, because it is inaccurate. I enabled the digital speedometer that you see where you can get average or instantaneous mpg. The M cars have it and you can too. But you have to code it in. You can remove the BMW "Korrectur" from it, I don't know how to do that to the normal speedometer. The option to have it is something like "B_DIGITAL_V" and the high reading can be removed with a command like "B_DIGITAL_V_KORREKTUR". My notes indicate I set both to "activ". I used NCSExpert which you can get from Bimmergeeks.

Simple and cool looking work around is to buy a heads up display unit off eBay. It plugs into your OBD2 port and projects the digital speed on to your windscreen.
Only cost me about $A25 delivered. |
