Tow hooks...racey or goofy as an accessory?
What do you folks think about tow hooks on the 1M as an accessory?
Beyond its occasional practical application, do you think it's Racey or Goofy? .

Ugly, unnecessary and suggest you need to be towed frequently either due to poor reliability or poor driving ability.

At the track? Acceptable and perhaps a necessity. On the street? Goofy, a safety hazard and smacks of trying a little too hard*...
*Mandatory disclaimer: IMHO |

Isn't there a tow hook supplied with the car for use when being towed? This would be a useless mod even if it were not installed. I would worry that those colorful little rings are not engineered to actually hold the weight of a car when being tied to a flatbed.
Owner to tow truck driver: "Wait, don't use that! I have this colorful one, use IT instead." Tow truck driver to owner: "What the hell is the matter with you?!?" |

I wouldn't do this personally.
But how does this differ from the countless other mods that don't affect performance and are just for looks (ie. performance spoiler, performance grills, vinyl roofs, shadow/german colored replacement badges) If you like the way it looks, I say do it. Personally I think it looks better than a large piece of out of place carbon on your trunk. And before I get any crap for that, any decrease in lift from the spoiler is negated by the added drag. If you like it, do it. I would rock a white and black one occasionaly. I go to the grocery store with a roll cage.

Looks totally goofy on street cars.
Mandatory accessory in many track groups. I only have one on my track car and keep it screwed in because it barely sees the street and folds into the center intake when not in use. |

I put the factory-provided tow hook on in front when I'm on track. I do it as a courtesy to emergency crew and other drivers so -- if my car is disabled for any reason -- it can be quickly towed to a safe area.
A toe hook on the street? No way! Neil |

Well since you put yourself out there -
If you had to ask then it is obviously GOOFY. A serious question would be - Would Kirk have one on the Enterprise? Just in case he needed a tow after a Klingon attack. And what colour? |

Do yourself a favor and leave them at the dealers!
Why would I not screw that stuff on my car (even if it were "track only")? a.) the metal loops will slap against the paint and ruin it. b.) the first time you get towed, you can throw the stuff in the trash as the paint/plastic covering or whatever it is will come off. c.) you won't know if these tow rings work before someone tows the car for the first time. If they don't work and something rips/tears, that is dangerous and a bloody nuisance for everybody else on the track. d.) either use what BMW provides and use it both front AND back! The basic rule when recovering a vehicle is to ideally pull it out exactly as it went in. Since you will mostly drive into gravel traps front first, it makes sense to have tow hooks mounted both front and back. Imho the most practical tow devices for track use look similar to this:

Great for tying the dog leash while parked. Hence, goofy.

Ellen: He was speeding Rusty. Rusty: No he wasn't mom. Clark: Russ, listen to your mother, I was speeding. I was driving like a maniac. We can all be greatfull to this man for stopping us. You see kids, a car... Cop: Here's the leash sir, I'm going back to get the rest of the carcass off the road. .
