Front wheel drive 1 series.

Hi all. I was reading in the Feb edition of Wheels mag that there is talk of a front wheel drive 1 series. My initial thought was WTF. Why would you? I think that would be a bad move for BMW. There is no way you can get the ultimate driving experience from FWD. I have never had a FWD car actually drive in a straight line. RWD for me.

my first car was a bmw mini... thats FWD and although it was only a 4 cylinder 1.6 but it was lots of fun to drive. the handling was excellent, didnt have to slow down much for corners... this may be more to do with the design of the mini (minimal over hang etc.) but there are others i can think of which i dont think you get here but also small like the Peugeot 106 Gti.. my mate has one, topgear recon they are one of the best handling cars in the world, it also does 0-100 in 6.7s stock.

With the introduction of a 2 series, they give themselves room to move. Perhaps the long term plan is for the 1 series to be hatch & fwd only and the 2 series to be coupe & rwd only. It would help to differentiate the two, which is the whole point of the exercise in the first place.

In Sydney, there is no real advantage to a FWD car. After spending four years there, I'd almost forgotten how much it sucks to drive a RWD car in the snow.

I think things are well and truly beyond the rumour stage. The BMW 1-series will be built in the UK on the next-gen Mini platform. BMW need another premium small car to build their model range. I guess they see most sales for it in Europe, but undoubtedly it'll be popular here too. I think in the small car size, there isn't much between FWD and RWD (as the Mini has shown) and BMW have said they can make a great handling FWD mini-Bimmer. You can see that BMW are going to blanket every segment of the premium car market.

I tell you what, if BMW can make a car as good dynamically as the Frog Trophy 265, with BMW interior build and ergonomics then they may have a winner... I'm just sayin

perhaps with a nice face like this...

Ok. The coupes and convertibles will be even numbered and hatches, sedans and wagons will be odd numbered. The 1 series coupe/convertible becomes a 2 series, likewise for the 3 and 4 series. In this case I am thinking that FWD will go into the odd numbered series. This will leave RWD for coupes and convertibles.

as far as has been announced (?) only the 1ers will be fwd

i'm not sure they'd go FWD in the 3er, they're pretty big cars.. 5er would be laughably bad fwd.

This is a bit OT but I personally haven't driven a RWD in the snow, but it is kind of scary that your car doesn't turn and you are heading towards the edge of a cliff which I experienced with a FWD when I was coming down from the Dolomites.

Also, the rumoured Z2 is likely to be FWD.

mm will be interesting to see, interesting indeed

the other germans are making FWD base models, but they're also offering AWD options to them... i'm guessing BMW won't?

Z2 .... didn't know about that. Will need to do some searches. Hopefully it will be a more affordable roadster and one with a decent roof line that keeps my head out of the wind.
