OEM Tint Level

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I have never looked into window tinting before and I am not sure how it works. It seems like there is a very slight tint on the windows from the factory. Does anyone know what level that factory tint is? I would need to know what it is on the sides (door and rear side windows) and the rear because I want to get 3M Crystalline 50% on the sides and the rear, but I don't want to go darker than allowed by law in the state (50% on the sides, 35% on the back sides and rear) because of the factory tint in combination with the 3M tint.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Any halfway decent tint shop should have a light gun to check tint level. Ask them.

Agreed... I "thought" it was 70ish.

I have done 20% on my last 2 cars where the state limit is 35%. I don't think they can limit the rear windows as they come tinted 15-20% from the factory on almost every SUV on the market. Unless you're doing something to aggravate the police in some way, you're not going to get a ticket for 50% under any circumstances, regardless of the factory barely-there-at-all tint.

+1. A ticket for 50% tint is just ridiculous and...unheard of?

You should be fine, unless your state has a NO TINT law. I have 50% and you can clearly see my face in almost all lighting conditions. That's what most cops are looking for. VA laws state 50% sum of both tint and window, however, the police have an "acceptable range" to account for OEM glass tint permitting 50% as legal application.
