Hatchback on I75 in OHIO ???

Ok, I've been a 135i owner for over a year now so I know pretty well what the car looks like. Today I was motoring down I75 South and noticed a 1er headed North, as it approached I realized: IT'S A 1ER HATCHBACK ??? I know they aren't available in the US but can you buy one in Canada, if not, what the heck is it doing here in the states ??? Anyone ?

Nope, they're not. Must have been a Mexican.

That is not very likely. The costs behind taking it to a company that is certified to convert it to US specs would not make it worth it. That is unless someone REALLY wanted to bring it over because if it was not US spec you would have to ship it yourself as the US Gov't would not.

Visiting more likely than exporting.

The car you saw more likely than not had BMW NA or CA plates. And hence a research car - to test the waters for a hatch. Car makers can import a non compliant car for up to one year. Then they must export it OR crush it.

Or.... the car you saw could have been shipped into the US as a tourist. You can import a non compliance auto- so long as you post a bond and export it within a certain time frame. I think also a year max.

Btw.... Germany also has this same law. I have seen MANY American cars driver over here on US state( as in the various state) tags. I have seen a Grand Cherokee on Nevada tags, and a few cars with Florida tags. Again you got to export them before a certain time and also post a bond and pay some fees.

Cool, so I could import a 1978 Mercury Colony Park wagon to Germany to drive on the Ring.

Yes. But only for a short time. I think you must export the
car within six months time.

PLUS... gas costs about $7.50 a gallon!!!

I remember reading in Automobile Magazine - years ago (1992-ish?) that Bob Lutz while he was at GM brought in a Trabby (Trabant). A US car manufacture could bring in any non-complying car so long as they export it (within a certain amount of time) OR they crush it! And crush it they did! I remember the article syaing how Mr Lutz used the Trabbie's non existant brakes to scar the crap out of his two younger kids who just got their drivers lic! lol

I really hope this is the reason for the car being in the US. I would love a diesel hatchback.
