Valve Cover Gasket [VCG] N52

I have an 2008 with only 60900 miles. I have noticed for sometime evidence of oil "weeping" on right side of engine but not drops of oil. Indy BMW mechanic wanted to change VCG. I was reluctant but agreed (appointment in a week). At home I removed engine cover and did see oil accumulation in 3 recesses next to #1 spark plug. Looks like mostly coming from eccentric shaft sensor seal. Lesson learned: if you're over 60K miles, and there is ANY evidence of oil leakage, pull your engine cover [moderately difficult] and check underneath.

Pro tip: put your engine cover in a box in the attic until you sell the car since it serves no purpose, makes every job slightly longer, and potentially hides obvious issues.

I agree and will be doing it to mine. Makes checking a lot easier for any leaks. To each their own though when it comes to a "tidy'd up engine bay."

For the OP, I seem to have the same issue as yours. I answered your other thread re: tech inspection and also planning at least two weekends of DE in Aug and Oct, so hopefully I pass. If not, would you mind PMing me or posting here how much you spent on the VCG/ESS gasket fix. I have looked on the DIY, and it's a bit intimidating tbh.

I followed your advice; I had the mechanic leave the cover off.

The cost was C$608.50 or about US$470. Now that price has a bit of a discount due to my membership in our local BMW club. Essentially the work is supposed to take 4.3 hours. The owner of the shop is a big sponsor of our club and both he and 1 of his mechanics will be instructors.

Thanks NorthernDancer . Good deal you got there as I know it's $$$ in most independent garages.

FYI, if you have the N51 engine, this is covered under the SULEV warranty. Mine was leaking and my dealer replaced free. MY09 and at around 85k miles at the time.
