Accident - Poor 1M

Well, it's been months since I've been on here. As luck would have it, on July 4th someone ran a red light and t-boned my poor 1M (directly in the passenger door @ +/-40mph).

I have a couple of questions for anyone who knows...

Months later, I'm still without my car. Apparently, the part that I need is a quarter panel/rocker panel combo, and it needs to come directly from Germany. Does anyone have experience with this part? Are there two different versions of the part; one where the rocker/quarter are together and one where they are separate? I have been told that the VP of BMW America's is involved because the part STILL hasn't been shipped, and frankly, I'm getting pretty annoyed with the whole process. I know the car is rare, but holy hell...this is a little insane. We're coming up on a 3 month mark here.

Can anyone help or explain why this may be taking so long?

Side-note: this car took a beating really well; what a stud!!! for the speed and considering the impact point, it looked a whole hell of a lot better than the other car. didn't really matter to me, as i still wanted to knock the guys teeth out for not paying attention to the road. but, that's why they call them accidents.

Sorry to hear this happened. Maybe you should talk to the 1M whisperer, member Glassoman55 about that, he seems to be knowing this car better than BMW.

+1. Glassoman may be able to help you out.

You may find the BMW corporate/replacement process labrynthine and slow at times. I once had to wait nearly a month just to get a new radiator for my '07 X3 (inadvertently damaged by the shop). No clue what took so long. As efficient as they are at production, etc. their support mechanisms can be lacking at times.

I would think this reflects the rarity of our vehicles as well.

I'm not a whisperer... but I am a claim adjuster.

The 1M is produced in the plant in Leipzig, Germany. and since I have been lucky enough to tour it, I can tell you that the sheet metal panels are certainly bent there by the machinery in the plant, so yes, it's a near 95-100% certainty the part would need to come from Germany.

It does happen fairly often that a part for a vehicle will go on National backorder here in the US. Essentially.. parts are often produced in batches. The manufacturer will make a run of parts from time to time on their own schedule. Of course each run is intended to be large enough to maintain a supply of parts in their suppply chain until they make another run. Parts are typically most difficult to obtain on NEW models (1 year old or less), where all the parts being produced are generally routed to the line to be installed on vehicles as opposed to building up parts in the supply chain. In the case of a rare vehicle such as the 1M... particularly a rare vehicle that is discontinued, backorders for parts can occur. The H2 Hummer is a vehicle that I most recently saw with a back order.. I had a claim where the customer ( a claimant.. my insured was at fault) waited about 90 days for a running board.. ... this particular owner was not very understanding and was incredulous that a part could be on backorder. Since our insured was responsible we had the owner in a rental for months! Eventually the owner then took the vehicle back from the shop with repairs incomplete just so they could drive their vehicle while the part came off backorder..

As TIT2GRE indicated.. the worst thing about National backorder parts is that the manufacturers typically have NO TIMETABLE (that is given to the customer). I am sure internally that someone likely knows, but calls to the parts department will generally yield a " it's on backorder " reply with little assistance or additional remedy. Body shop reps are often surprised by the part just arriving one day... because they typically arent notified the part came off back order.. it just shows up.

As far as the part itself.. a quarter panel is one large piece of sheetmetal... It would generally be by itself and could come as an outer skin which can be sectioned in, or a complete innner and outer panel. The rocker panels would be a separate part. Both parts are likely unique to the 1M in that a 135 part would not apply.

it's good that you have a VP on the case.. but to be straight up honest.. it probably doesnt matter. I am sure the plant produced a bunch of quarter panels when the car was made... then say... produced a run of 100 (? that's a total Wild Ass Guess) more for their parts supply. I would imagine that as the supply gets low they then set up a time for another run, but that Leipzig plant has been OVERLOADED since BEFORE the 1M was even produced. They build all the 1 series models and the X1 on that line in that plant. if you are familiar with vehicle manufacturing.. the supply of cars being PRODUCED in the plant is already sold before they are made. So... imagine a requisition for time to produce a particular part.... I sincerely doubt that it can be moved up very easily.

It sounds like you are a claimant in this loss. I would recommend that once the repairs are nearing completion, you have a discussion with the claim handler regarding Diminished Value.

Sorry to hear about the mishap and delay.

Rumor goes that BMW Germany experienced a major IT issue earlier this Summer, complicating BMW to retrieve car parts. Except if mistaken water infiltration or a flood destroyed servers, or something alike, which were vital for the car parts inventory (stock picking). Compare to some extent with erasing the boot sector of a hard disk: all the info is still on the hard disk, but the guide to retrieve the info in the huge inventory is no longer available. Or another one: imagine that at Ikea you got to sort out yourself without location code where goods are exactly stored on the shelves. This (also) might have contributed to delays for getting car parts.

BMW in the US is also consolidating some of its warehouses and due to this there are some shipping delays. Though that should not affect your issue. Also some parts (body parts) are just not in inventory anywhere in the US. I'm waiting for some panels and they told me mid/late October when I ordered them in August. I guess we're both SOL
Maybe your bodyshop should have told you about this (delay in parts) as soon as they ordered the parts and the parts counter guys told them they'd have to come from Germany

glad you spoke up. so, apparently there are two different versions of this rocker/quarter panel. one that is separate (as you described) and one that is together such as in my car. apparently the one that is all together (perhaps that's what you meant by inner/outer?) is what i need, and is even more difficult to obtain. lucky me!

i heard back from "BMW" but was sadly misinformed. i actually contacted by the dealer, who has ZERO power at all. he offered some keychains and hats, etc, but I told him my issue is with BMW in this case. i can't hold the dealer responsible, since they have no control over manufacturing. this is seriously making me second-guess purchasing this car. i would really, MUCH rather contact someone at BMW...as this is a BMW issue, causing me to not want to own a BMW.

as you stated, yes...i'm the claimant. i understand the process, and i'm not even mad...i'm just frustrated with BMW in taking so long. it's been 3 months, and yes...I've been in a rental (a nice elantra...yippee!) for 3 montsh now. $11,000 worth of damage (so far). i'll post pictures up a little later.

You need to be pursue a diminished value claim when this is all over. The car will be worth less than what someone would have paid for it pre-accident.

Yes.. it sounds like you need the entire quarter panel.... which includes and inner and outer sheet metal panel, as opposed to the outer skin only. It's nice that the dealer has offered what concessions they can provide.. although a BMW loaner would be a really nice offer and would keep the at fault driver's insurance company from paying out for a rental for you for what really is a BMW manufacturing logistics issue. not only are you out of a vehicle.. that insurance company is going to pay a couple K in rental charges that really should be handlled by BMW.

so...update:

i got the car back finally. car was in the shop from july 1st to november 16th..then went back for another couple of weeks for minor adjustments, etc. now it's getting new tires etc.

i did end up making a diminished value claim. according to NADA the car sells for nearly what we paid for it STILL (as we all know), but for my situation, I made a claim for $2,900.00. the claim ultimately ended up being around $11,500 total...but the work completed was amazing. even the diminished value specialist that i hired said the work was immaculate. luckily, i've had zero issues other than one; a plug for the security system was left unplugged (travels down the passenger side, and turns on/off lights with remote entry). the only place you could tell [physically] was with the weld points near the inside part of the trunk. but honestly, the weld points are stronger than they would be with the stock glue/gunk anyway. overall, i'm pretty pleased all things considered. allstate (who is paying out the claim), did not ague with the diminished value claim and it appears that they will pay that diminished value settlement.

point of the story...don't damage that rocker panel!!! OMG...your car will be in the shop for a good 4-5 months. thanks BMW (sarcasm). hope nobody else has to go through this...if BMW doesn't have the part...it will take FOREVER to get them!
