Potential 1M Owner - Requesting Advice

Long story short, I’m in the market potentially for a 1M or A45. I think it is time to move on from my heavily modded turbo 350z that I have spent the last 10 years tinkering with and start a new project. Having owned a 130 for the last 3 years I’m quite fond of the BMW “feel” and will be easier to get it past the misses.

After some pointers on

• What is a good price to pay. (generally seeing 95-108k which I thought was a tad on the high side. I was expecting mid 80’s + onroads for low K's)
• Confirm what options were included in the OZ delivered models
• Option costs. If someone has the original price guide that would be awesome
• Does comfort access provide the passenger mirror tilt like my 130
• What to look out specifically for in a second hand 1M besides the obvious checks
• Are there any fundamental differences between the 2011/2012 models

Attached is what I found but not sure what was included locally. Having comfort access on my 130 is awesome. Not sure if I could live without it again. The options I’m interested in are:

• Comfort Access
• Professional Nav
• Professional Radio
• Open to recomendations

Any help is appreciated or links as I’m more than happy to read.

Just having electric mirrors provides this. Comfort access doesnt. 99% sure every 1M would have the mirror "dip", as all Aussie 135's do.

Storage package I find is pretty crucial. No cupholders without it!

1M's at high $90k's is a good price considering what your getting as a total package.

If a boy racer 4pot 2.0l hatchback is what you like then you can't go past an S3 or A45.

Doubt you can get one 2nd hand under $90k until later in the year.
+1 on this. As a price guide the cheapest 1M sold was 92k, but will high Ks late last year. I might able to dig out the price guide somewhere, but the cost for those are small to make much difference on 2nd hand pricing.

The car come standard with mirror tilt.

No difference between 2011/12 model apart from age.

There is a high percentage of modded 1M. Nothing really to watch out for with never been modded cars as a 2nd hand owner you can still get a couple of things fixed out of warranty. Some paint and leather quality issues, and the cracked side mirrors. It might be easier to have the seller to fix those before you take ownership. With modded cars, you should check the quality of the install. With previously modded cars, you should check if the original parts are put back correctly.

Extended phone connection is a must but I doubted there are any cars without it. Of course, I would say the CD stacker is useless. Don't worry about high beam assist either as it doesn't work very well. Others are just personal preferences.

The ski bag was a "must have" of course.

I think you are still 6-12 months away from seeing these cars change hands in the 80s. Low to mid-90k is probably "market" at the moment for a low kilo car.

Yes, I got the Ski Bag for my driver, but I haven't got my clubs out for about three years.

lol Joe, I just got that reference.

Good luck OP. Why not consider an 08/09 E92 M3? They're well under 90k now

edit: nevermind.. you probably want a boosted engine coming from a turbo'd 350z.

All.. Thanks for the quick responses. Will be heading out to a few dealers hopefully this weekend for a chit chat.

@Superdaws: Was just going by the 130. When we ordered, comfort access provided the mirror tilt so assumed the same. Thx for the update

@Woosh: I did look into the M3's but at the same price point the K's are considerably higher and since NA more involved to tweak. Coming from the WRX the Z was the first NA car that I converted to forced. Learnt alot along the way as I did all the work myself but it is nowhere as simple as starting with a boosted car. I easily dropped 40k into the car onto of the new purchase price which I will never see again. Not sure I want to go down that path again. With the 1M plans I reckon I can stay around the 15-20k mark for mods.

@beemer: I assume he is selling his. I will search to see what the fuss is about

@sparoz: Thanks for the feedback. Will rather a stock car but again minor mods are easy to evaluate.

The redbook is listing private sales at 81-88K as a gauge so i'm hoping a low K 1M is achievable at around 90k.

I'm not trying to low ball but my assumption is that the A45 will have an impact on the resale of the 1M and with the next version rumored to be out in ~2 years I need to be careful that I do not overpay.

Redbook, a crock for dealers. I sold mine at $92, another member sold his for high $90's. mine had 25000ks by the way.

Red book values are for dealers to use against sellers, nothing more.

Re Sparozs car, haha if it was on the market, and I doubt it, it would be worth $140k +++ knowing what mods it has

The A45 IMHO will not impact resale on 1Ms, the market will dictate independent of any other car, aside from a new M2. The 1M is a 1 off parts bin classic, unlikely to be another car like it from BMW, that is to say not a limited 12 month run car.

Good luck with your search and research and welcome aboard 1Addicts.

We typically keep our cars for around 18months, which we did with the AW car. It also had too many k's for our liking. So we bought another one anyway.

MR RIZK: My car is not on the market. All joe's fault making me adding the cost of my mods up and now I feel depressed (like for a minute ). If you pick parts that has better than stock quality it adds up rather quickly with the 1M.

LOL.. Yeah I know.. You would be surprised how much parts for the Z were when it was in its prime.

Amuse Ti Exhaust 3.5K
Ohlins Suspension 3.5K
Engine build 12K
ECU 2.5k
HKS Turbo kit 8k
Rays Te37 with tyre 6k
Stoptech BBK 6.5K
Nismo twin plate 2k
Quaife diff 2k
etc

46k just for some of the core components without misc parts like return fuel system upgrades, sensors, rose jointed bushes, traction arms, arc radiator, air/oil/ps coolers, and unfortunately the list goes on and on. Now I feel sick.. I just keep saying that I have amortized it over 10 years so it has been only 5k a year

I'm genuinely concerned since the 1M attracts euro pricing and is partially niche market. My only saving grace is that I'm good with my hands so never had to pay labour. I need to do more research in this area though.

The plan is (if all goes well) is to keep it simple. Basic supporting mods like exhaust, front pipes, IC, suspension and ecu. I will need to research the limits of the oem fuel system and hopefully stay within those limits and be satisfied. No turbo swaps nor internal engine upgrades. Just keep it simple and enjoy it.

Never been a dyno queen, don't care about the kw nor the 1/4 mile. To be honest have no idea what my car will do down the 1/4.

Just after a car that goes well, handles the twisties and brings a smile to my face every time I get into it.

PS: In relation to some 1M specific stuff above I have made some broad sweeping statements so don't flame me for this as i'm still researching.

The 1M handles brilliantly and already does that out of the box.

OEM Fuel is plenty if you are not looking at turbo upgrades. Here is your guide and will stay within your budget inline with your previous mods:

Akrapovic Evolution Exhaust $5k
Ohlins R&T $3.5k
AR DP $900
GruppeM CAI $2K
ETS FMIC $800
ER Charge Pipe $300
Forge DV $350
Flash (Evolve/ESS/Cobb) 1k

Most mods actually comes from the US, so it is generally US pricing, but Stu at BMR can get most parts in for you and you have local support. For the flashes, evolve, ess and cobb all have local support. Best price for the Akra should be from Europe at the moment.
