new key programming
I just got a used spare key for my 2012 128i (no comfort access) and was wondering if it's possible to program it to work with my car, I just want to have it as a backup just in case. recently took it to BMW dealer and asked and they told me I can't use it and have to order a new key from BMW. any ways to program this to work? thanks.

If your car has CA and you want the key to do the CA bit, it must be dealer programmed.
I think the key will work if you just put it into the slot at least once, but I think that is just to lock/unlock and start, it wont start the car with the key in the ignition I also believe the key is coded to the VIN Quote:

You cannot program a used key AFAIK.
If you want a backup order the plastic key + empty plastic FOB. Shouldn't be more than $100. ISTA can program CA keys so you can skip a trip to dealer. |
