BMW Out of Fuel Pumps! DINAN OK
Ok guys if you have been following my threads about my problem with my fuel pump and DINAN, I decided to start a new thread and let DINAN off the hook and give people info on our fuel pump problems. I was jerked around by Greenwich BMW about my Fuel Pump and sent back to Motor Werks West in NJ to look over my DINAN software. Well this is what is happening, after many calls to DINAN and BMW, the DINAN software is fine. But BMW is having huge problems now with our fuel pumps, the dealers have cars sitting at Greenwich for weeks because the new fuel pumps are not national backorder. They told me that one lady has had her pump replaced 3 times and now they just gave her a 745 for a loaner car and told her to just drive that until they can get her a new style pump. The head of the DINAN program at Greenwich called me today and told me that he would call me as soon as he can get me a new fuel pump so I can drop off my car. He told me it would be a waste to drop it off now because they have none to put in. He said that every fuel pump in every 335i, 135i, and 535i is going to have to be replaced and that BMW is just waiting for new ones to be built before going ahead with a recall. They are just not available now, and that is the reason we have not seen it yet. He said it is a huge problem and they have never seen anything like it, BMW was totally caught off guard by this and they are playing catch up. I am waiting for a phone call to bring in my car, but I found a dealer with 1 new style pump and I am going to give him till Thursday to call me otherwise I will bring it to the other dealer. Also the process for getting a new pump now is a hassle they have to run all these tests and go through Pump who ok's if they will pay for a new pump or not. The reason they did not do mine is because they would not drive the car to 130 mph to recreate the problem. But DINAN and Motor Werks West came through for me and took care of my problem and I am just waiting to get my new pump. So the moral of the story, sooner or later we will all be getting the new fuel pump.

happy ending. good to know people are taking responsibility for their actions and not stiffing you with the bill. lets hope your fuel pump doesnt die before they can replace it.

Hope this fixes it. If not, well, that more or less puts me on track for a 128.
What is actually wrong with the current fuel pumps? |

From what I have learned today and I went to the top of DINAN who is in touch with the big boys at BMW. Every N54 fuel pump will be replaced, and BMW is really scrambling to get this right. It costs more to keep replacing bad pumps over and over then to just do a recall and do it once. They just do not have anywhere near enough to do that right now.

well my dealer wont tell me if my car has a faulty fuel pump, i have long starts (5-7 sec) after the car has sat for a while, and my car feels really really laggy after it has warmed up and i do some spirited driving.
is my fuel pump going out?

I read this story here or one e90post but someone posted a service bulletin stating to stop replacing fuel pump with existing replacements because they are bad as well. Now everyone is in line for a new and supposedly fixed, fuel pump.
Found it: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12869 EDIT: I hope the HPFP recall is coming and not a by case replacement. BMW can pull it off, remember that big e46 m3 engine fiasco? If they can handle that relatively well I wouldn't be worried. Just need patience, which I don't have much when it comes to defective product.

I'm glad BMW is looking to rectify this once and for all. Also, this exemplifies why Dinan is a good tuning option for those with BMW/Dinan dealerships. Props to Dinan for looking out for you.

Without replacements available, and the frequency of the failures, BMWNA is looking at a bunch of cars that could easily fall under the Lemon Law unless they get their act together in getting the newly designed parts engineered, produced, and distributed.
This is not a new problem, so they should have all the design work done.. but who really knows? |

I'm not familiar with the 135i yet but for e36 or e46 BMWs they have 2 fuel pumps and the high pressure fuel pump usually fails or lagging at high mileage. Based on that for those who have long starts (especially if the car has been sitting for a while), I would recommend to do 2 starts. First start would be from 3-4 secs, and if it doesn't start then stop and do a second start which will be less that 5 secs. The reason behind that is in the e36 or e46 the HPFP doesn't pump fuel until the ignition start switch is turned but since its lagging it doesn't pump fuel right away and the other fuel pump isn't enough for cold starts. So by doing the 2 step starting will give a chance for the HPFP to start pumping and by the second start it will have primed the engine to start. When its warm the other fuel pump starts the engine and once the engine is on it gives a chance for the HPFP to prime the engine. I'm surprised with the 335i out for over a year now almost 2 years there isn't after market high performance pumps yet.:iono: |

Other than the long cranking time, when the fuel pump quite, are we stranded and the car won't move at all? This concern me a lot. Also, my car was built in July, does it have the old/bad fuel pump? Thanks for the answer if any one know.
