But as a nod to the brand's "new" identity consider that all M cars for the past 12+ years have a quad pipe setup...beginning in 1998 with the introduction of the M coupe/convertible (a very small car on the z3 chassis with an inline 6 BUT the boys at the M division installed quads), then the e39 M5, then the e46 M3 (another quad on a 6 cylinder), then the e60 M5 and e6x M6s, then the z4 Ms, then the e9x Ms, then the X5/X6 Ms (quads on a forced induction motor...albeit a v8)....see a pattern?

And, lets not forget that we already know quads will be on the F10 M5.

So to reiterate - I'm not mandating that the 1M have quads to actually be an M car in brand or spirit, and it probably doesn't make mechanical sense to have quads, but if it will be an M badged car, I bet it will get the quad treatment to stay in line with the brand image.

Is it possible they might leave out the quad exhaust to retain an upselling point for the M3?

IT DOESN'T!
I prefer a lighter setup. Quads seem unecessary for the new 1 series M

Although if they're just barely off a perfect 50/50 and that extra material puts it in perfect balance, that's one performance argument...

I knew you'd come around, Auggie!! I was 100% thinking the exact same thing as you until a week ago. I think it might actually stick with the current set-up to save much needed weight now. I was bummed about it but now I really dont care. Just PERFORM 9/10ths of an M3 and most of us would be excited! A software tune would likely extract the other 1/10th.

Spartikus, my man, did you actually think i was a complete convert?

Am very pleased with South's work here though....and I do agree that the weight saving is a good call.

BUT if you're going to toss on those heavy M badges, gills and bigger than necessary sporty side skirts and front spoiler and rear facade, why not add 12 or 15 pounds of pure M love to maintain the identity? I mean, come on - it's getting a carbon fibre roof, so that should negate the weight and add a lower center of gravity.

Obviously we'll have the heavy M sport seats and the red tach - if that level of detail suggests this is a 100% M, why not just finish it off with some quads?

Maybe it should be called the 135M, along the lines of X5 M and X6 M...assuming they can't call it the M1...

I like the previous suggestion of M135CSi. The M635CSi was one of the best Bimmers of all time.

My guess is BMW will go with the X6M / X5M naming structure and call it the 1M which has a nice ring and also wouldnt look bad on the car as a badge.

It would be more distinguishing if the go with M Coupe since we dont have one of those in production anymore since the old Z4.

And with the weight of a "///M135CSi" on the trunklid, you'd easily get the front wheels off the ground at the dragstrip.

God dammit guys,
use your heads, this is definitely gonna be the new ///M Coupe.
It makes perfect sense, as the old ///M Coupe (Z4M) is no longer in production and instead a Z5 3.5is.
The new ///M Coupe and hopefully ///M Roadster will be based off the current 1 series.
Expect more hp, more torque, more muscular styling, an ///M limited slip diff, ///M quad exhaust, ///M Suspension, and bigger brakes. Oh wait, all of that has been discovered to be on these test mules.
