225/255 Setup, Any Downside
I see a lot of talk in this forum about running 225/255 tires instead of the stock 215/245 setup.
Are there any downsides to going up a size on a 135i? This would be on an otherwise completely stock car that is not driven on the track ever.

No downside at all. IMO, these should have been the OE sizes.

How about front 235/40 rear 255/35 combo? Is 235/40 too wide on front? Thanks.

That is a pretty strong recommendation coming from a tire guy.

The tires were mounted on Breyton GTS-R wheels. The sellers said they won't rub; but I saw most people installed only 225/40 instead of 235/40 on front; kind of wondering.

235/40 is a taller tire then 225/40, I wouldn't do it.

+1. It's a 1/2 inch taller diameter, and a little wide for a 7.5" wheel.

I kind of feel the original point never got discussed fully here as the thread got hijacked by a question about a different tire size. To repeat, the car will have stock wheels & suspension.

The first reply fully answered your question. There is no downside, absolutely nothing you would notice. The majority of the members who keep stock rims use a 225/255 setup.

I put Conti DWS 225/40-18 and 255/35-18 on my stock 261M wheels and they work just fine for my "winter setup". When I got my CS7 wheels which are 8" and 9" widths, I put Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics (225/40-18 and 255/35-18) on and they fit great. Now I think that is the perfect wheel/tire size that should have been standard on the 135i. |

I have that set up. I bought the tires and wheels from Tire Rack. The car rides and handles much better than the stock the wheels/tires. No regrets. And I have the stock suspension.

I'd worry about rubbing on full lock - this happened to me on my late C32. You don't notice until you take the wheels off and look under the arch. Also, remember that when you change your tire height your speedometer will be off so it's not like there's no down sides. A recalibration will run you $100 usually.

Haven't suffered any on the stock suspension running these on Michie PS2s with stock wheels. I'm very happy. Big test is whether they will fit under the BMW PS which is on its way but I think they should fit there as well.

I agree with that, and when I feel ready to cough up the dough for the Yoko Advan RZs, I think I'll go with the 8" and 9" widths.

Hankooks are pretty square shouldered. I run 255s on Forgestar F14s and one of the 255s rubbed a bit until I had the fender slightly rolled. Can't say for sure about how they work on OEMs.

With the 225/255 setup wouldn't you have more sidewall flex over a RSC (run flat tire - in the 215/245 size)? This is my main concern. I really do not want to loose ANY steering response with my 135i.
The 225/255 setup seems very temping though. Also... my local tire dealer here in Germany looked up in a book the max size tires you can mount on wheel widths and size. For the OE 18' M-wheels (7.5" & 8.5"s ) he told me that 225's and 245's are the biggest tire I could safely put on the wheel. That is also what TUV says too. But... I do not have to worry about TUV since I have US tags thru the Army. Comments? Dackel |
