There's two types of android box you can get
One that replaces your screen with a touch screen and another that interfaces with Idrive and uses the existing Idrive.
There's some Aussie you tubers "zero to 60" that have done some videos on them both

I bought one from AliExpress but hasn't arrived here yet.
I'd already gone to the trouble of getting connected drive working previously and was disappointed at how clunky it was.
Let me know how you go

I'd love to take your money from you but I haven't done a 1 series, I haven't even seen any instructions for it.

So my car Installer could not get it working. Actually caused a warning light on the dash.

Have to return it back to Taiwan, luckily eBay enforces the return policy

Oh well back to the drawing board

Think I will go with a android head unit.

Sorry to hear bud !

So been living with this and it's still one of the top mods I've done.
Issues of note.
1 For some reason in google maps when I hit the dictation button the Bluetooth audio stops streaming. The only way I know to reconnect is to re-pair with apple car play and then it' needs to be forced to re pair to the combox in the car via bluetooth
2 After listening to Spotify if I exit the car and lock it up and come back it defaults to Apple Music. I need to select Spotify and take up where o left off
3 steering wheel buttons work but they are reversed when compared to original ie original down=next track and up is begin track again/ previous track. CarPlay next track is up button
4 audio directions for google maps isn't coming through but is for apple maps

now for the good
1 If you only use apple native maps and music it would work pretty well I'd say
2 Siri integration is next level convenient
3 full screen maps is awesome
4 iDrive control and shortcuts are super convenient

Well to be fair it should work. The car is electrically at least same as a 3er in most cases

Hope it works out for you. At least you bought it off eBay. I took a gamble on AliExpress. By many accounts it can be hard to get engagement from Ali sellers when you have an issue. eBay has a lot of protections for buyers that make it pretty safe to buy almost anything.

I'm super happy that I sourced a car with no stupid I-Drive and an aftermarket head unit already installed. It saved me a lot of hassle!
