I managed to be one of the select few to get a 1m and I decided to come on a forum complaining about the exhaust system on my performance BMW. I'm going to waste my time and the dealers and see if they can make my obnoxious car quiet. |

Owned e30 318is, e36 m3, e90 335xi, built Porsche and other turbo engines. Anyways, Im not sure how me owning previous BMWs would help me to sympathize with someone complaining about exhaust noise. "Drones" can come from exhaust noise bouncing on certain road surfaces and even driving styles. It's hard to prevent these kinds of noises on performance exhaust systems. My buddies Carrera GT drones like mad but he goes out and enjoys the car, he doesn't post a poll complaining.

After 2000 miles I can report the problem has not changed. Driving on the highway, no hills, steady gas the noise inside the cabin will go up by almost 10db and disappears, then come back. It is not a steady loud noise.....

Stock BMW exhausts are not known to drone including M's (rasp is not drone). There are plenty of stock performance exhausts on high-end luxury sport cars that have been engineered not to drone. A Carrera GT is not a luxury sports car. Is droning hard to prevent? I'm not for certain, but I do know it can be prevented with little or no impact to performance. I haven't heard the 1M's drone (hopefully, never will), but I find it odd that some 1M's have it and some don't. If it is not occuring is all 1M's then I doubt it is a designed feature and hence the purpose of this thread. |

In 1500 miles I have noticed on a handful of occasions that the exhaust starts to drone. It has literally lasted less than a second each time but when it did happen, it was MUCH louder than normal. If it were happening regularly and consistently I would probably be very annoyed. As it is I barely even notice as it has truly seemed to be a transitional sound.
On my last "performance" car (2003 Mustang Cobra w/ a Borla exhaust) there was a real and consistent drone at at about 72-75 mph and I would say the brief 1M drones I have noticed were louder and more annoying. |

Did my first significant highway miles, at 70mph. Was definitely a very loud drone, and shifting up to 5th completely resolved the problem.
Pretty annoying, as my average gas consumption is @18MPG already, no where near the sticker tag. All that said though, hugely happy with the car. Highway drone is my only complaint. |

There is definitely an occasional drone between 70 and 75. it comes and goes so it is difficult to isolate. I'm wondering if it is more of a sheet metal resonance. If so a little butyl based mass loader in the trunk might fix it. It would 5 or 6 lbs to the car, but it might help

That is a misconception. There are aftermarket exhausts that are a lot louder than the OEM they are replacing. Some have drone, some do not. It all come down to design.

Okay - over 3000km now, and drone is still there. It is at 82db with my meter - i.e. 2db less. Otherwise the car is around 72db, in 5th.
I have given up long highway runs with the car now... I guess that's not what the car was designed for anyway... There is no drone at cruising speed on the M3, nothing on the M5, and really it shouldn't have any with this car. I love the exhaust scream, and I don't mind it drone. It just annoys me when it resonates at highway cruising speed.

I plan to use this car most every day. Hopfully its not to bad. I guess i'll have to wait till I make my 800+ drive from my pickup at my dealer to see how loud it is.

It is not that bad. If it bothers you at 70, listening to the engine hum along at 78 - 80 mph is very relaxing. No HK needed.

How many of you folks have had this addressed through the dealer? And was the issue resolved by slapping a new exhaust altogether or some other 'fix'? Just wondering if dealers are responsive, or skirting it as 'normal'?

I have not picked or driven my 1m yet, but having built several cars. O I have had a M3 that droned with one exhaust but had no drone with an aa exhaust. I have a 400+ hp 335 with a dinan exhaust that does not drone and is not that loud.
So, if there is a drone, someone will make an exhaust that does not and who here does not plan to put at least a cat back exhaust on this car? A tune+cat back back + cai will probably get this car is the 400hp range at the crank.

Current solutions are: drive slower, drive faster or use 5th.
