Ok, first you'll need to make sure the trim under the driver's side and passenger's side dash is removed.
The console may need to be raised from the back significantly and wiggled into place.

Just noticed you have a 120i, the console is definitely different.
Still, FYI the console on the 135i doesn't just easily slip in place. You really need to play with it and move it from side to side and up and down. Eventually it'll just pop into place.

At least it did for me.

I just secured it the way it is, and i'll bring my car to the dealer to see what they can do, thank you for all your help, this site and this thread rocks! I just got my bmw and i love all the stuff i'm learning here, thanx

trying to do a cubby hole to ashtray swap
how easy it to scratch up the console or completely break it?
doesn't look like something I'd like to do to my new car, but any more experiences?

How much did the carbon fiber interior trim cost and where did you buy it?

Hi guys,

Just trying to remove the centre console, and have for the past 1 1/2 hours been trying to disconnect the pictured connector (it had a purple bit on it, which I've removed to see if that helped), which goes from the armrest (phone cradle). I've managed to disconnect the other connector that came out of the armrest (bigger one).

Can anyone please advise how to get this connector apart?

Feel bad for you folks with iDrive. I found out that you don't have to remove the panels under the passenger and driver side, just remove the plastic rivets and unclip them from the center console piece. I have a steptronic and putting the car in D gave the center console much more space to slide out. Super easy task compared to all the other mechanical stuff I've been working on. Thanks for the guide OP!!

No easier way to for example DI-NOC on the ashtray trim?
As its pretty easy on all of the other trim in the car, why should the ashtray be any different.

I'm assuming you should be able to pull apart the two pieces. I dont have the iPhone cradle so I just have the female end of the connector which is placed in the same position you pulled it from on the console. Hope that helps...but not 100% certain. GL

If I had known what a PITA this all was I wouldn't have swapped out my trim. But now it's finished. Thanks for the DIY!

I was worried about damaging my console when I did this the first time so I priced it on RealOEM and found it was about $100. I figured I could risk that so I proceeded to install the drink holder you get with iDrive. Nothing was significantly damaged so I did it again in my wife's 1 (and automatic). If you are careful, I think this should be your outcome. Plastic pry bars will help a little but basically you just have to be careful and not apply too much brute force.

Germans definitely do not want their electrical connect to jiggle lose. That is a good thing except when you want to take them apart. You have to figure out what the mechanism is that prevents unplugging for each connector. It is generally a plastic notch on the outside of one piece snapping into a recess on the other side or some kind of loop around. The connector for the instruments is really clever in having the loop around lever jack the connections into position.

AndyM

Hi there,

I understand this thread is quite old now, however I had the exact same idea in mind to change the dash trim to be montego/electric blue and I was wandering if AndyM or anyone else could tell me where abouts I could get hold of the montego blue dash/door trim?

Thanks

Same procedure but it's really difficult to get the console over the DCT. With a manual you can just put it in 4th. I would recommend having an extra set of hands and maybe try to remove the DCT lever.
