Extended Warranty & Maintenance

Hello all, looking for your opinions on the value of purchasing the extended warranty and maintenance options directly from BMW.

The vehicle is CPO'd and has maint. through Sept. 2015 and regular warranty through Sept. 2018. Does anyone here have an opinion on whether or not it is worth extending either of these options? I intend to use the 1M as my daily driver so I will be racking up the miles, about 15k a year. Initially I've been thinking paying for the extended warranty but not the maint. is the way to go.

Price to extend warranty from '17 to '18 is $2305
Price to extend Maint. from '15 to '17 is $3295

Any thoughts?

I called the guys mentioned in the other thread from above. They are a BMW dealer, the warranty is the official BMW plan, and the prices for forum members are $500 off.

As an example, the full-coverage (includes the Nav system) Platinum plan was quoted to me at $4452 for three-additional-year coverage, which seems fairly reasonable to me, given the high cost of even moderate repairs for this car.

I'm still torn about spending $700 more for the Nav coverage (Platinum plan), but I'm going to see if my local dealer will match the price and I will buy in on one of these.

I have to give that dealership, Steve Thomas BMW, recognition for dissuading me from buying the extended warranties they sell even though they obviously would be losing their profit from the sale in doing so.

I explained that I had just bought a used 1M with 26K miles on it, and intended to drive it a few thousand miles a year being as I have a number of other vehicles and it is basically a part of my "fun car" collection.

I spoke with Jim Martinez, referenced in the linked thread. When I told him my situation, his response was, "I can't take your money." He said that with my limited mileage driving intentions, the likelihood that I would come out on the extended warranty was around zero; he said the extended warranty would be a waste of my money. He said "we are a small family dealership and it would not be fair to charge you for this coverage that you are unlikely to use; don't buy it."

One doesn't hear this sort of thing very often, but when one does it deserves to be recognized. Thank you.

So tentatively purchased a 7 year warranty from Steve Thomas....waiting on some info before I pull the trigger. with the extended maintenance (2 year) it is close to 10K for gold 7/100K. This thing is my daily and I drive hard every day? Kind of worried that the engine or something else will go in the 70K range. I have no problem paying it but could invest the cash instead.

For me, extended warranty on this car is essential for peace of mind, and if I ever sell it, which I suppose I eventually will, I think most potential buyers would view it as a positive.

But here in the UK it's very good value. I just added a second year of extended comprehensive cover for a very reasonable £285.

for 285 GBP it can be called "essential"....for $5000 (the price of an extended warranty here) it is completely useless, IMO.

Another question would be, once out of warranty, what is the differential price between getting your car fixed at the local BMW dealer, vs. getting the same job done at an independent garage. Usually, the price difference is NOT trivial, which may further undercut the value of getting an extended warranty from BMW.
