There are no lifters

Rockers are driven directly of the cams but you still have to set valve clearances

So from an engine longevity perspective what driving style would you recommend?
More specifically, warming up, type of driving, cooling down, redlining.

As long as you warm in up properly and do regular maintenance at 5k intervals
these cars should go for a very long time on stock tune

On any sort of tune its really depends who tuned it

With any sort of turbo car they tell you these days there is no need to cool down, that is utter rubbish

Just drive sensibly for the last 5 min of your trip and that's good enough

Redlining is not a problem just don't bounce of the rev limiter

The harder you drive the more costly the maintenance is going to be, have fun in your car that is what you brought it for but don't drive it like you stole it.

No car can put up with that for long

The N series motors do use lifters, refer part 7 on the image below. I believe the only recent bmw motor to require regular valve lash adjustment is the s54, but i could have missed one or two.

So what sort of price for an older 1M with 100k ish kms?

Is it unrealistic expecting price to be 50-55k ?

It's a lifter but it isn't in the traditional sense they are cam followers and all motors require a valve lash adjustment at some point

The n54 in most cases never need one but if driven hard most of the time I would get done at least once at around 100k because preventative maintenance is cheaper than cure and get the valve cover changed around the same time as these split and crack from heat and age

So while changing the valve cover get the mechanic to check you adjustments as at this point it's only around 1hrs extra work at most and a piece of mind everything is right

On carsales, I'd say.

Seller put his 13,000km 1M up from $85K to just over $90K.

I bought my 1M with 10,200kms in July. I paid nowhere near $85-90k.

With the knowledge that these cars havent and probably wont depreciate like regular cars, i reckon some owners are listing their cars opportunistically, and ultimately speculating on someone willing to pay overs.

I spend way too much time trawling carsales, and you see it amongst other models too. For instance the first current series c63s in the country were being listed at 10% plus premiums on rrp! Even taking into account orc, i reckon some were trying to make a quick buck...

Like martymil says, the market price is as much what a buyer is prepared to give.

Personally id love to upgrade to a 1m, but it is currently a sellers market.

It's a bit more volatile on low availability. E30 M3s are a good example.

But current series C63s (do you mean W205?) aren't a good sample... That happens to all cars fresh off the block. Focus RS, Mustang GTs are a couple of cars where people were asking up to 20% over RRP to make a quick buck from someone who couldn't be arsed waiting 9+ months in queue.

Actually I'm pretty sure since the C205 came out, W205s have steadily dropped.

I'd if every seller increases it's price then wouldn't that sort of determine the market value coz the average of acquiring one goes up.

It's a funny market. one minute it can be hot cakes, next it could be waiting there for months. unlike the porsche 911 993 market values!

What there needs to be is a shortage and demand for the prices to go up and I don't see many people rushing out to buy these cars

Well there is a shortage as currently only 9 on Carsales however the cheapest 1M has gone up in price by $3,000 today despite being on the market a long time and over 100k's. It would be great if Sellers did not copy and paste the marketing blurb and actually tell us something about the car they are trying to sell!

I have a feeling it's only the start of rising price because theres more m2 than 1m now available on the market.

A lot of reviewers state that the M2 is nice but the 1M was a more rewarding raw experience?
