Go for it.

That's what I'll do the next time I need a new battery... I'm not gonna let the stealership burn me ever again for a new battery.

But there are also comments from people who bought a cheaper cable and had to buy another because the first one didn't work.

Registering is a one or two step process depending on whether the replacement battery is the same size and type. If it is, one step. If not, then you also have to tell the car about the battery and that's an additional step in a different piece of software. I haven't done a battery yet but the coding I've done wasn't hard but it can be frustrating when something doesn't work and you don't know why. If nothing goes wrong, it only takes a few minutes. I've seen comments about people coding remotely.

I have all the cables and ordered the software but I could not get it to work because the menus were in German and the seller would not give me enough support you have to be super software savvy to be able to do this. I bought all this from Rifia Group. It was a waste of money on the software. they expect you to be as knowledgeable as themselves

Does the BMWhat app code an FLA car to AGM? I haven't heard of anyone saying it can do this. I know it can register them.

If it's from the stealership, it's never fair.

They charged me over $600 for a new battery and labor... Under warranty. After some complaining and asking the local news station to investigate, they reimbursed me the full amount.

You can buy a replacement battery from the auto parts store for around $150-$200...

I haven't purchased it yet, since I just got a new battery, but from what I've seen, BMWhat (now called Carly... I guess BMW had a problem with the developer using their trademarked name...?) looks to be the most user-friendly.

It's cost you about $100 ($30 for the dongle, $60 for the app).

Here's a link to the web site: http://www.mycarly.com/product/bmw-app/

Thanks, just purchased the app and the genII adapter. Now can I use an optima battery and register that?

I would check with BMWhat/Carly support... They should be able to answer that.

What do you guys think my only option is to buy the oem battery from the dealer at about $370 or an optima battery for $289 or a napa legend agm battery for about $240. I already purchased the carly for bmw app and obdII dongle. I am on Guam and this are the only choices i have. Thanks

It's pretty obvious that you shouldn't buy the battery from the dealer.

How do the Optima and Napa batteries compare? Figure out what's important to you between the two batteries and pull out the credit card...

On the optima battery i will have to rework battery hold down but aside from that it would work.

The NAPA batery is a straight swap.

Thanks,

I thought I read somewhere that there were different mounting points to accommodate different sized batteries.....?

I purchased an optima battery today and tried to test fit it. Here are some pictures while i wait for my carly for bmw dongle to arrive. I also mocked up the fabrication needed to keep the battery from moving since this is also an autocross car.

Congrats!!

BTW, it might be better to connect the trickle charge extension cable in the engine compartment rather than next to the battery... Easier trickle charger access.

Battery on the 128i vert was on its way out replaced it with an optima red top. I did not know that the ah rating on the yellow is different form the red. Yellow is 48 ah and red is 44 ah. According to bmwwhatapp is there is no exact ah rating on the options use the next lowest one. Unfortunately the lowest one is 46 ah.

So tell me if I am understanding this correctly:

Dealers will charge around 500 or so to replace the battery, and tell the car which battery it is so the car can adjust the alternator and service counter ...

Buuuuuut, we can go and purchase a nice mega -awesome battery, that is suitable for the car, and less than half the price, AND we can tell the car which battery it is for the same reasons, as long as we have the app and the dongle from Carly?

So, I can spend about 100 on the app and dongle, then about 160 for a decent battery and do it all myself with no repercussions or damage to the vehicle.

Am I on base?
