1M Owners opinion on new G22 4 Series
Ok, so.....I sometimes think us 1M owners fall into another category of BMW Enthusiasts if you will.
A little old school, appreciate the simple and visceral experience of motoring with a modern touch. Given this, what do you guys think about the new direction BMW has taken with the design....ok, maybe not new new....they did have much older vintage cars that had a long top to bottom grill....but, definitely new to us. |

I was all in for a G80 6MT as a family car, but not sure anymore.
Looks - I am not too picky, but I prefer subtle grilles. Euro Delivery - No longer an option, major setback for me, that is part of the reason I was looking. We shall see, but I might get a Blackwing or a Ford Bronco instead, both coming in manual. |

It's kind of overdone and ugly, but that wouldn't stop me from buying it if I wanted the actual car.
BMW and I are operating in parallel universes right now. I admire the kind of cars they used to make, which made driving fun. The 1M is of course a high water mark in that now-gone time. BMW has morphed to become just another "luxury car" maker. In a world without manual transmissions, responsive (e.g. hydraulic) steering, tight chassis, and responsive, fun-to-drive vehicles, it's just another car line with leather interiors, big engines, new car smell, and high price tags. Added to that is the general unreliability, which gets expensive very quickly, and would dissuade me from owning a vehicle branded BMW outside of its warranty period. Plus, their value declines faster than an ice cream cone in August. I have a bunch of the old type of cars, 4 of which are BMWs. Of the two modern cars I have, an M2 and a Golf R, both manuals, I actually prefer the Golf R, overall. Neither are as much fun to drive as the old style cars, but at least the Golf R is very practical, with its 4 doors and hatchback. My next new car will probably be a very practical one, and with so many practical but soul-less candidates out there, I think it is really unlikely that it will be a BMW. Certainly not this one.

I really liked the F80 M3, I had a basic 2015 and the steering was not great, but the overall practicality made it a fun muscle car that was an all rounder. S55 engine was quite good, but that model year, the car was more playful. After the 1M it was my favorite BMW, but I looked at it as more of an M5 muscle car/kid hauler. Not a B-road blaster. With new cars, they don't offer as much feel, so I wan them to be practical. So, I echo your post above. A Wagon with a stick would get me excited about a brand new car. |

So, after reading the comments thus far and taking a couple days to think about why I have issues with this new design direction....I came up with a very simple response.
It is simply not an elegant and timeless design in my opinion. I see it maybe being remotely popular by non-enthusiasts and after a couple years this design will be bored and tired. As compared to let's say the design of the 8 series which in my opinion will still look good in a decade from now. I'm curios how sales will stack up 🤔 |
