How much should I get for my 2012 135I?
Getting ready to move on to an M235 or M240 next week.
My car is a 2012, 135k miles, good shape. How much should I be able to get on this car through a trade in? Thank you ahead of time for any comments. |

With that many miles it's likely going to wholesale auction, don't get your hopes up. I've actually been wondering what my 11 would get, but I only have 70xxx miles.

OK, where are you and car? Only Tortuga I know is in Haiti. You could easily get $8K for it if it has been well looked after and you have maintenance records to prove it. Also, would need to be totally rust free. 135s can be a money pit if proper maintenance hasn't been done. Can you prove at least 8 oil changes?

Stating what's probably obvious - you'll get far more selling it yourself than trading it in. Even if you don't want to hang onto it for too long and do a lot of negotiating w/ random strangers & idiots and are OK not getting the best price for it, you'll still sell it for more.
I am also thinking in the 7 - 8 range, maybe 6's, trade-in. More, perhaps far more (half again?) if it's well cared for via private party. |

Alot of people will tell you that you can get alot more on a private party sale, but it's usually very unlikely once you figure in time and effort. I sell PP, but you will almost never get what you want, you'll have a ton of people waste your time, and theyll always show up with less cash than agreed. Selling PP is a nightmare.

I know this is a bit late, but when selling a car private verses trading in, you also need to consider tax advantages. You pay no sales tax on the trade amount (most places). So $6000 x 7% = $420. More or less depending on your tax rate. So you're actually getting $6420 in that situation. Something to consider is all.

I feel like that is only if you make money on the car - i.e. a collectors car appreciates. Generally cars depreciate and I think you've already paid the tax when you buy it and don't do it again.
