Homologation
Does anyone think that the reason BMW is only building 2500 1M's, is for homologation purposes? I don't know how many are required to be built.

Homologation is a process that is a little more complex. You can find the regulations here (link). Imho there is no group/class, where the 1M really makes sense.
Group A and N homologation requires 2.500 identical units (Group N link / Group A link) The "old" DTM cars (e30) were Group A based. Today a Group A homologation is valid i.e. for the S2000 (WTCC) or the WRC. BMW could homologate the 1M for the WRC, but it doesn't fit the regulations (1,6 liter, single turbos). This is the list of the FIA classe that require homologations. See if you can find one that the 1M fits into. => Link
