Broken Rear Shock Stud. Trash it?
While the wheel was unloaded, went to loosen the old shock, felt some resistance and snap. No big deal. It’s toast anyway. Went to install the new one, started to tighten and snap. I had a pair of shocks so I installed the other one no problem. The trick was to tighten only once it was on the ground and loaded.
I understand what I did was foolish, breaking not one, but two shock studs. Stems? Whatever it is, can this be salvaged? I’m thinking of taking it to a skilled welder to weld it back on. What do you guys think? Open to suggestions, ideas, ridicule. Throw it at me. View post on imgur.com

Did the same to my rear TCK shocks a year ago. We all make mistakes man.
As for what to do with them? I'd circular file.

Is this simply from over-torqueing? Or is the procedure reliant upon them being loaded before torqueing?

The lower shock mount puts stress on it when suspension is fully extended. Both when loosening and tightening I broke it in that position. The only way I avoided snapping it was by threading it on, dropping the car back to ride height, then tightening it down.
Feels like a shame to throw away a perfectly good part because of mounting point but I guess I’ll trash it. |

I'd look into fighting for money and possibly competitive arm wrestling.
Contact Bilstein and have them rebuilt and get some custom valving while they're at it? |

Ya maybe you just need to shorten your grip (choke up) on the socket wrench for a little less leverage.

The torque spec is only 28 ft-lbs. If you get too aggressive I can see breaking something.

Yeah I'm telling you it doesn't take much. Especially if they're old and seized.
