First Auto-X
Yesterday ran her for the 1st time (on the RFT's), best time was 48.18 ---- compared to BSP in the 45's - full results not up yet and I had to depart early so not sure of FTOD, etc......
North Florida, 85 F, very humid, full sun (T-storms approaching mid afternoon), asphalt track. Gainesville Raceway (road course). Anyway - Went 40 psi F and R, 1st run left TC on - felt it several times. Last 5 runs TC was full off. I got a good launch by sidestepping clutch in from about 2500 rpm - had some wheelspin eDiff is not the limiting factor, I had a lot of plowing, front tires just not enough grip. On fastest run - I braked harder, took inside cones closer, and swung wider on corner exits. Some body roll but didn't seem excessive. Brakes felt great through all 6 runs (roughly 15-18 min between runs). Excellent in slaloms with superb transitional response. I need some Hooiser crack now........ We are angled like that as there is a gate straight ahead about 15 feet, you can see the cones for right side of gate ----just enough you can't get out of first until you go around and about 45 deg turn to left (also note pointer cone on Slalom cone 1) Yes - My trunk money was hanging on for dear life !!!!!! |

Awesome! Like your numbers and it sounds like you had fun. I had a similar day, weather-wise at my autocross yesterday. We had threats of thunderstorms in the area, and I even called a lightning delay for about 15 minutes.
I'm pretty sure I did manage another 1st in class (3rd straight, if so). We had a huge B class yesterday with about 17 cars in it. |

Congrats! I have changed my driving style somewhat to minimize understeer. Slow in, fast out helps considerably.
I took 5th overall in PAX and 1st in the street tire class (scroll to bottom) yesterday at my event. I really like the 'stone guards' on your car, RedTRex. I have a feeling that without some type of protection the areas just behind both front and rear wheels will take a real beating from gravel. Do you have part numbers by chance?

nice first autox. I look forward to taking my 135i vert to the next BMW autox in 4 weeks. It should be broken in by then.
Thanks for the tips on the tire pressure. that lines up with what other people have been saying. I am very interested in seeing the eDiff in action. |

I agree with 40 lbs front pressure but think that is too high in the rear--I run 36 (cold).

Mikeo - I took your advice at my second auto cross the other weekend and it worked out pretty well but had to keep bleeding off air as they heated up and both (F&R) kept pushing 40-42 PSI. You mentioned 40F and 36R PSI (COLD)... did you change your PSI when they heated up or try to maintain those pressures? Thanks.

I've tried both bleeding air off and just going with the cold pressure without bleeding air. It's very close, but I'm thinking no bleeding might have worked best.
After 6 auto-x events the outside edge of the OE front tires was pretty badly worn so I had the dealer re-mount them inside out. Should be good for the remainder of the season. Rears have very even wear.

great thread. can you post a few more shots of the mud flaps? I have been thinking about them but can't find any good pictures. I am looking forward to an autoX in the next few months.

Big tip for most autocrossers...
One other thing I found to save both tire wear and prevent the tires from becoming too loose... Use a cheap garden sprayer with water in it to cool off your tires between runs on >80deg days. You'll prevent the tire compound from getting too hot. Hotter street tires become slippery when over hot, and they more easily grate away on the tarmac or (worse yet) on concrete when the rubber compound is too soft.
Let you tires heat up a bit for a couple of runs, but then spray them down after each run. What you'll find is that as others start losing time on their last few runs, you'll be able to maintain and possibly (probably) knock off some time. I used to think spraying the tires down was only good for R compounds, but it's most definitely not... |

lib, normally, you'd have a bit more air up front to counter effect understeer, even moreso with staggered tires. 39F/36R was a good setup for my runflats, when I was running them (before I got my track setup).

Ran yesterday (boy was it hot too). Started at 42F 36R, which worked fairly well - began watering tires after run 2, rechecked pressure after run 4 saw 44 F and 38 R -> reset to 40F and 36R---gained almost a second by run 6 (some of that came with course experience by the 6th run too).
I also just installed a big honkin 32mm ACME sway bar which helped considerably -barely saw any scuffing on outside edge of tires..... BTW ---> 78 drivers -- I was 11th pax/24th raw |
