Winter wheels rubbing on front fender liners
I purchased a set of used 18" wheels with 245/40/18 winter tires already installed for my 1M. The wheels are rubbing on the front fender liners.
Does anyone know if upgrading to the "new" fender liners with more clearance will solve the problem for this tire size, or will I need to purchase new winter tires for my wheels? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks! |

Obvious questions would be: What wheels? What offset?

If the rubbing is minor and occurs only at the louvres in front (behind the coolers) then you may solve the issue with revised liners. The revised liners have a larger recess in the louvres to allow more clearance there and are otherwise the same.

The wheels are Apex EC-7 ET31 18x9. The tires are Michelin X-ice 245/40-18. This is the wheel/tire size combo recommended for a winter set-up on the Apex website fitment page. This is why I am surprised that I'm having issues with rubbing. The rubbing is only on the fender liner and only when the front wheels are nearly completely turned. The rubbing is on the plastic louvers as noted above.
Again, thanks! |

You're in Ohio and maybe under a foot or more of snow. Unless you have access to a big heated garage, I'd leave it go until Spring. Can't imagine you need to DD this car. You have a truck, right?

Thanks for the thoughts! I've decided to order the modified fender liners and I'll post on whether or not that takes care of the rubbing once they've been installed.
I love driving my 1M and wouldn't want to keep it cooped up in my garage for 4-5 months/year. Therefore Ohio + 1M = 4 winter capable tires for me! |

I went ahead and installed the "improved" front fender liners on my 1M this afternoon. It was easy and only required removing the front wheels, 8 and 10mm nut drivers, and less than an hour for both sides.
I'm happy to report that there is no further rubbing of the wheels on the new fender liner. Problem solved. |
