Any updates? Would love to do the swap this year. Used E82 transmissions are under $1000. Does the driveshaft need to be changed? Diff and diff ratio from auto work with the manual? I assume most other parts are ordering the OEM part and supporting hardware..clutch pedal/slave/clutch line, trans brace, guibo, shifter assembly and tuning to manual via NCS?

I converted my 08 Auto 135i to manual last year. I followed this guide: for an E90 335i and the steps were 100% the same minus selecting the e82 (obviously) when doing the coding.

I guess if one really wants a manual no automatic will do least of all the way this one is programmed. The car's auto to me operates more like a manual. you feel every up and downshift, the converter felt locked up like a clutch all the time, except auto shifts in Drive mode and you can't slip a clutch to smooth out up and downshifts.
I always thought if you wanted an auto if it worked good, it'd be easier to reprogram this auto and maybe install a higher stall converter than swapping in a manual, but never heard of anyone doing it. I think a 500-800 higher stall converter would step over the sub-2000 RPM valvetronic lag, program it to unlock on throttle tip in to get rid of lag, get rid of the abrupt shifts under light throttle in sharp corners etc. The auto trans could be fixed with just programming and maybe a higher stall converter, but I don't like reprogramming and modifying my car. |
