Why not a top range C7 vette. Nothing is going to compare to that value at the price as it relates to performance. High end model c7's are absolute monster sports cars that will hang with exotics all day while getting 30mpg from a bullet proof engine.

Actually today I priced out a C8 Corvette at right on $80k, so its doable if I'm careful with the option.

I don't like the look of the older Corvettes though.

If not going Porsche, I'd probably look at certified used F-Types. Jaguar's certified used program is 7 years/100,000 miles, and I think the F-Type will be considered an all time great beauty from the last decade. You can get certified F-Type S convertibles with hardly any miles under $50K-$60K.

Yeah, I really like those Jaguars too.

Just saw this thread. My curiosity is why do you feel the need to change your 135? It’s a great car, you don’t owe any money on it so why spend 80k on a summer car when you have one???

Yes I've head this question before and its certainly valid.

In many cases the car is fine. Its never seen rain or snow and in general I've babied it (I'm the original owner). Top is in good shape and car is currently running fine.

That said its 8 years old and despite only 65k miles on it I honestly don't trust taking it more than 50 miles for fear that something will go wrong and I'll be stuck on the side of the road somewhere.

Honestly this has been true for some years now since I've been boned 3 times this way so far (water pump, dealer messed up water pump repair, and a few months ago battery/main computer failure).

Though I have been considering keeping it another year and just taking it to work and back a couple days a week and tooling around town in it.

Its still a fun car and for what I can get for it at this point even if I had to put a few $$'s into it as you noted that's still cheaper than say the $70k Z4 I've been looking at.

I’m the original owner of my car as well. I have 60k on mine. Last year I was getting bored of the car and went through the same thought process you seem to be going through. At the end it seemed silly to spend 70k on a summer car when I had the 135 which isn’t produced anymore. So I decided to take 3k of the 70 I was going to spend and upgraded the suspension and new wheels. It looks and drives like a different car. I couldn’t believe what the new suspension did. I’ll be good for a few more years! Food for thought.......
P.S. water pump and battery over 8 years doesn’t seem like it should make you worry about driving it longer distances....

Oh there's been other things.

OFH gasket, and main computer failure (somehow covered under warranty despite the car being 7 years old).
I'm going to need tires for sure and god know what else they'll find at the next oil change.

But with all that said what I might do is find a Z4 that's close to the config that I want.
Wait until towards the end of the month and see if, with all that's going on with the virus and stock market, they are desperate to make a deal.
If I can get a good deal maybe I'll buy one.

If not I might keep my 135i another year.
Its still a pretty fun car, especially when the weather is nice.
